im doing a school project and this is one my questions:

Does overclocking a video card by 10% mean increasing its overall performance by 10%?

I know that the answer is no but i cant think of anything to back my answer up, can u guys help me out?! Thank you!
 
You could try doing some benchmarks and making pretty charts :) .

Thx for yur responce! but i need to come up with a hypothesis first, i already taken care of the expirments (benchmarking), heres a bad example: I think overclocking it by 10% would just improve its performance but not exactly 10%, it may vary. I need to expand on that
 
I don't know what your paper is about, but to me it sounds like you are running in circles. Maybe look at overclocking from a financial perspective. Your hypothesis would be something like, overclocking is financially effective because I can get these results using this generation of hardware and then compare the cost of brand new hardware vs. overclocking current hardware. A prime example would be the cost of an A64 3500+ vs. the cost of an A64 3700+. 3700+ speeds can be safely reached by the 3500+ without having to spend the extra 200 bucks.
 
when you talk about a 10% overclock, it strictly has to do with clock speeds, since performance is so subjective. and just in case you wanted to know:

if you have a 350mhz default clock, and you overclocked to 525mhz. formula would be:

new = default + default * percentage
525 = 350 + 350 * %
175 = 350 * %
.50 = %
50% overclock

lets say you have a xp2500-M it's clocked at 1800
your oc for that chip is 2758mhz

so you do 2758 - 1800 = 958

now you have 958mhz oc...help me finish guys....i can't remember the last part :D

Now you figure out how much % 958 is of 1800 and go on :) to get the oc %

well it depends on alot of things
1. a 10% OC will get more speed on a higher clocked proceser
i.e on a 1000Mhz cpu 10% would be 100Mhz not much of an OC
but on a 3000Mhz cpu you would 300Mhz

see the problem then with that fact that a 2Ghz A64 is faster then 3Ghz P4 just adds to the unknows

lets say we use a 2Ghz A64 and a 2Ghz P4 a 10% OC on the A64 is going to yeld more speed becuse the A64 can do more work in the exter cycles then the P4

also how are you OCing makes a diffrence if you use an unlocked cpu just up the multi thats not going to give the same increase as upping the FSB to get the 10%

just a reminder, i dont really know anything about oc'ing, a hypothesis is what u think ur results will show, it does NOT have to be right, but i dont know if u have to correct your hypothesis and need help on that. and after u state that 10% bull shit, just make up a bunch of crap to elaborate...make it sound good ;)
