I kind of want to beef up my file server on the cheap. Currently it runs a 4570s (I know) with 8 gb ram. I don't need to go crazy nor do I have the cash. But what would be a cheap route to go, the server does stuff like DVR duties with an HDHR and holds all my media running emby server. I am starting to use it to transcode video and the 4c/4t cpu just isn't up to it.
I am thinking something that would use ddr3 to keep costs down. Maybe an old x79 with one of those cheap xeons? I can never seem to keep up with all the xeon models and the platforms they belong to.
I currently use quicksync for trascoding media on the fly and it works great, not sure this would be an option with a xeon, I would also like to start messing with some VM's but with the current hardware figure it would just bog the system down.

(wasn't sure where to put this, section wise)

Hey, I'm thinking of selling my server, I've used it with unraid for years. It's great but I'm not using it as much as I should be. If you're interested let me know.

ASRock EP2C602 http://m.newegg.com/products/N82E16813157352

128GB Hynix RDimm 1066mhz

Dual e5-2665

It's a 16 c / 32t beast with tons of ram. I constantly have VMs running on it. One Linux mint for h265ing everything and one gaming VM with Windows and a 1080ti.

This would be a good platform to invest in.

Let me know

Can you show that your server is being bogged down?

You have a quad-core CPU with 8GB of RAM- and VMs mostly just take up more RAM. So troll Ebay for some DDR3, and maybe a 4770 for hyperthreading?

Yeah that's what I have been looking at. It's definitely bogged down transcoding files and editing commercials.

Well, the Quicksync module is the same- the processors share the same die, after all.

You'd need to update to a modern DDR4 (6th through 9th gen) to get a good transcoding upgrade, or throw in an Nvidia GPU.

Sorry I'm just using quicksync to transcode on the fly, and it works awesome. But encoding mpeg2 to x264 needs more cores!

We're talking about the same thing- I have a 1050Ti dedicated to the purpose :).

Further, x264 should be supported by newer versions in hardware. It's x265 that eats resources these days.

[the NVENC module on Nvidia cards works the same way, nearly; most of the GPUs have the same capability, so a 1080Ti like I have in my desktop wouldn't be faster, and likewise, an i3 8350 would be just as fast at Quicksync as my 8700K or a shiny 9900K...]

Oh that makes sense. Well that's good to know that a big GPU is not required. I'll play around with my 1080ti in my main rig and see what it can do.

EDIT* WOW! I just did an encode of an episode in five minutes lol. I played it side by side with one doe with x264 at the same settings and I am really hard pressed to see a difference. The source was not spectacular but still. Speed wise that was insane. Thanks for the tip folks.
