Please Help! New Comp Not Turning On!

i just finished assembling my comp and nothing happens when i hit the power switch. i have rechecked every single thing in the case and still nothing. i know that the mobo is getting power because the green light is on. Could all this be caused by a bad power supply? Is it at all possible the the motherboard is somehow shorted out? I used the standoffs and grommets that came w/ the case while mounting the mobo. So what should i do now? System specs are in my sig......

put the motherboard on a table...

connect only a video card, (if needed)
cpu, and heatsink of course
memory
and a power supply...

see if it works...

reset the cmos if it doesn't

try again..

then if it still won't boot, swap out components till it does...

pull the battery, adjust the jumper, replace the battery, get scared when the system posts with bad checksum, realize it's b/c you reset, set settings, save, restart, POST, exhale.

takes awhile to learn that no matter what mobo/proc/system setup, you should always reset the CMOS. right after you open up the mobo box.

and don't bring it to a computer shop/show... they'll just flip the battery and give you a funny look...
 
are you sure you have all your headers hooked up correctly?

Do you have the mem in the correct slots (check the manual)?

Is everything seated properly?

did you hook the CPU fan to the correct MB header?
 
did you get the new case as well? if so it might be that the power button is defective.. you can try connecting reset button to the power header on the mobo and see if it works..
 
Most obvious suggestion: Make sure you have the case Power switch attatched to the right jumpers :D

If you have a light on the mobo, and no error beep codes, that might just be it :D
 
i sure hope it isnt the case's power switch.........i obviously cant return the case now because i modded it.... :(
 
i know it sounds a lil obvious but did you plug in the wire for the case switch?
 
yea i plugged in the case switch and all that, So could this be caused by a short on the mobo? If so should i take the mobo out and re-install it?
 
ok now i have managed to get the comp to turn on..i just loosened a screw on the mobo.......but it seems like my IDE drives arent getting any power, including the hard drive and it says to reboot the comp and select a boot device, but i cant do that cause theres no power to any of the IDE drives
 
If loosening a screw on the motherboard makes it turn on, then you have something that was shorting it out underneath. You need to take the motherboard out and make sure all the standoffs are matching the holes in the motherboard. If not, you can easily burn out a trace on the motherboard and ruin it.

Make sure you connected the 4pin power connector or whatever is called on the mobo.
 
yea that was one of the first things i did, but now my main objective is to get into the BIOS screen, unfortunately thats what i cant do...and btw if this helps at all....my cd/rw drive's LED light turns on and stays on everytime the comp boots up and the floppy drive is the only drive thats detected.

Sounds like a backwards IDE cable, or incorrect Master/Slave jumper settings conflicting with the cable location you've given the device on a dual-drive cable.

If you've got a Master jumper on the drive, make sure its plugged into the IDE interface on the end of the cable, not in the middle.

WHHAAAA??????????????

you dont plug jumpers into the IDE interfaces, NOR THE MIDDLE

btw, most ide cables have a lil clip mechanism that prevents the user from putting it in backwards... i have no idea about yours though

Haha, you have no idea what I'm talking about do you.

Here's how to read what I wrote: "If you've got a Master jumper on the drive, make sure it (the drive) is plugged into the IDE interface on the end of the cable (the Master IDE connector), not in the middle (the Slave connector)."

In plain english:.... Maybe he has the jumpers on the CD/HD drive in the wrong places for Master/Slave. Anyone who is familiar with IDE devices would plainly know what I am talking about.

I wasnt talking about plugging jumpers into a cable....gee whiz.

or....

Maybe he has the drive plugged into the wrong IDE connection on the cable. For example, if you have the jumper on the drive plugged as "Master", and you connect a 2-device cable to the drive, with the SLAVE connector plugged into the drive....the drive will not be recognized.

Is this plain enough? or do you need pictures? :D

i dont think cable placement on the IDE matters because its still running on the same cable... if you take off the IDE clips that connect it to the drives, you can see that the IDE ribbon is just a strip of wires running the same way.. no reason to change the placement or the jumpers due to the position of the drives on the IDE cable

pictures would be nice,... and i cant think straight now... its like 90 degrees here and im burning and the ACs dead...

anyhow, you can always set the jumper on cable select and position it anywhere on the IDE cable

Most IDE cables are just as you describe, but some IDE cables are specially keyed so that one connecter has to be master and the other has to be slave. They can key it by either cutting out a notch in a particular wire between the master and slave plugs or by removing the metal conductor in the plug itself (which achieves the same result). That is why there is a cable select position for the IDE device's jumper.

Basically, in a 2+ drive system where you have the need to put 2-IDE devices on the same cable, do the following.

1.Set the Hard drive jumper to Master
2.Set the CD-Rom jumper to Slave
3. Example of cabling

[]==============[]=======[]

Mobo===========S=======M

Thats for the standard 2-device IDE cable, where M is the master (hard drive), and S is the slave (CD-rom)

Now, you can also do CS (cable select), but for explanation purposes, you might have an easier time understanding the above diagram.
