no kidding.. it really is burning..

for all of your computer experts out there, PLEASE help.. i've done my share of troubleshooting but all i seem to do it make the problem worse.. i've taken people's advice and still to no avail.. think of this as a riddle b/c that's wat it is to me.. below r my specs..

specs:

Pentium LGA 550 (3.4)
Asus P5AD2 mobo
Corsair 2x 512 pc5400 ddr2
Asus x700pro gpu
2x WD raptor 74 in raid 0
2x Seagate Barr. 200 in raid 0
Antec neopower 480W mod. psu

history: i got all my parts and assembled everything except for the cpu... that, i left to my friend, but he effed up on it the first time.. we used stock hsf and as5 BUT it appeared that one of the four screws was NOT in correctly, so as you can imagine the thing overheated to over 100 and shut down...

Second try- wiped off all the as5 and reapplied a thin layer as before and set it up... temps were running super hot, as in it would boot up cold at 50s C... and climb to 70s during load and 80s on full load. raid setup was completed and windows installed, etc.. in windows, we manually tried to OC and see how much we can get it w/o having the cpu die.. big mistake.. we shot it up to like 37~3800 and it crashed.. it was too hot anyway, so he decided to reapply the as5 and get temps lower.

Third try- same procedure... i kept it this time.. i've read a lot about how prescotts were generally hot cpus, especially the LGAs... so it didn't phase me, but it was ridiculous sometimes.. i'd be on idle and all of a sudden i'd get an alert saying it's 84 C.... then i see i'm running cidaemon.exe and it's making everything lag. WHAT IS CIDAEMON.EXE??? how can i disable this? do i need this?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

problem: ok, so it is my conclusion that during the first attempt, i might have blown out the temp sensor on the mobo.. i don't even know where it is!!! if that's so, then that means the temp readings are incorrect, which means i have nothing to worry about right? can't i jsut recalibrate it? how would i do that then? BUT, that does not explain the burned-looking component to the left of the fan.. it looks charred (see comp pic).. when i put my finger on the heatsink it's barely warm sometimes.. another time i accidentally touched the fan for a sec and the temps got much cooler like in the 60s!!! but i didn't want to try that again. so, people say to get a new Heat sink and fan, WHICH I PLAN TO, but do not know which... even if i did, are my temps abnormal for a stock intel hsf?? everyone i talk to say they run in the 30s~50s.. sometimes 60s in full load... and i'm like... WHOA 60?? that's right when i cold boot!!! i think it could have something to do with running raided hdds that are like, RIGHT NEXT to each other.. i've taken the case side on and off and made no real difference in temperature.. BTW, all the time, my mobo is constant at 35~45 C... don't know if that's good or bad.... as you can see, i don't know much about computers, but i'd like to just fix it so my comp that i spend lots of money on, does not die and stuff.. people say to reinstall windows, which i think is another good idea.. i jsut hope it does not delete my stuff =P

well, i am gonna get a new heatsink and fan, but i don't know which is better for my comp.. a friend recommended the Thermalright xp-120 and anothe said the zalman was good... any thoughts? that's not the end of it though... even with the new hs and fan, temps will not drop to "normal" range of 30~50C... maybe it'll go down to 50~70 =P any idea why my comp is so hot? and what kind of tests can i do? is it the raid config of my drives? is it the space between the drives? also, on a side note, when i boot, it shows my ram as being ddr2-4300 interleaved.. how come it doesn't show as the 5400?? i know this is long but it will be MUCH appreciated.. i could really use some good advice about this... please help~

CIDAEMON.EXE

http://www.iamnotageek.com/a/cidaemon.exe.php
http://www.computing.net/windowsnt/wwwboard/forum/22319.html

Now, Prescotts do run very warm to hot but that is definitly abnormal. I have a 3.0Ghz that is overclocked to 3.6 and under the heaviest loads does not surpass 50c. I'm using a Zalman Heatsink/Fan combo so I'm still running on air. It does seem like something has charred on those pictures. What it is boggles me, though. Looks like some passive cooling or at least, that's what's written on it. From what I could make out, it says: "ASUS Fanless Design. Zero noise." but I'm not sure what it is. I'm thinking it might be your Chipset's cooling feature but your chipset should be lower on your board, usualy under your Processor..

I searched a bit on the ASUS website and downloaded the User's manual but there wasn't a complete board layout in there.. hmm.

And I thought my computer ran hot at 70c at load, I bought an XP-90 with some artic silver and lowered my temps probably at most 7c. DId help as the A64 is at max at 70c. I also question the Asus motherboard temp monitors as they all seem to be high. Under load I still probably hit about 63c. which is far from normal but below max. Ive done everything I can do to make it cool shoret of opening up the case and leaving it open.

Well you only need to look at your case temp to find a problem. 41-43C is way too high for a case temp, its no wonder your CPU is overheating with such a high case temp.

You need a better case/more fans/better fans if you wnat to get lower temps there. Intel recommend below 38C for the case temp on a prescott, but even 38C is too high IMO.

Airflow is king. With that said, get some more fans in there! Also, you *may* possibly have a defective Prescott, in which case I'd RMA it... just to be sure that particular CPU isn't the culprit. :)

3 quick things on a friday morning:

It looks like that is just dust on your mobo and not charr-bbq. See if you can wipe it off with your finger. Also your case looks mad dusty. A lot of case fans come with dust filters to keep your case clean. Maybe your filters are clogged with dust and killing your airflow. Are you doing some drywall work nearby? Live in a creamatorium? Do you eat 200 powdered donuts a day? ;)

Check your bios and make sure everything in running at the proper _stock_ voltage. You can also check temps and see if Asus Probe is lying or not.

The HS was a problem once, so it may still be a problem. If its not mounted flat on the chip then you will have problems. Take out the Mobo and install it if you really get desparate. Then you can take a close look to check for good mounting.

Can I just say:

you are an idiot to infinity, you knew your cpu was overheating so you overclocked it?

We'll one huge thing I see wrong is how clogged up everything is inside the case. MAN...WTF....who wired up your case man?? I think my 10yr old cousin could do better at routing the cables inside the case. You definitely could use better fans for better airflow as well as a major re-routing of your cables.

Another thing, when you installed the hs fan the 2nd and 3rd times did you just wipe off the AS5?? If you did that is another huge problem that you could be having. You need to clean the base of the heatsink with some 98% Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol and a smooth lint free cloth. If you can't find 98% then get 92% b/c it's pretty easy to find.

By a can of compressed air and blow that dusty thing out. Try wiping off the black dust on the motherboard chip next to your HSF. It looks like some dust to me also as stated in above post. Just use the compressed air or a soft cloth to try and get it clean. Check the temps in the bios are they are usually more reliable than software in Windows.

Try all of the above things and see how your temps are and for your sake don't overclock the processor till you get the temps way down and stable. If all these things above are done and do not help then I'd consider an RMA on the processor and try your luck with another.

Also if you can find someone who is really computer savy that lives near you and doesn't mind helping you out or that will charge you a small fee, then by all means see if they can help you since you don't have a lot of knowledge as to what you are doing.

Good Luck

well, i am gonna get a new heatsink and fan, but i don't know which is better for my comp.. a friend recommended the Thermalright xp-120 and anothe said the zalman was good... any thoughts? that's not the end of it though... even with the new hs and fan, temps will not drop to "normal" range of 30~50C... maybe it'll go down to 50~70 =P any idea why my comp is so hot? and what kind of tests can i do? is it the raid config of my drives? is it the space between the drives? also, on a side note, when i boot, it shows my ram as being ddr2-4300 interleaved.. how come it doesn't show as the 5400??

You say that you're gonna get a new heatsink/fan then you say that with a new one it "will not drop to normal range ... maybe 50-70". How do you know?

It's not the RAID.

Also, your memory will show up as stock unless you change it, it won't show 5400, that's just what you can push it up to.

case temp.. hmm... i thought lian-li cases were okk... well, either way, i run my comp with case opened and closed and still produces the same kind of heat. i'm going to order the heatsink tonight and get a new fan, clean out my parts, etc..

one thing that struck me was that i might have used vodka instead of 98 or 92% to clean off the previous as5 =P plus i used a napkin to wipe it off =P

YES I GET IT.. i am an idiot.. who knew all this comp stuff was so intricate =P i did the wiring and after taking a good look at every1 else's i think i'll change around some stuff, but not exactly sure how..

what is proper_stock_voltage? i check my temps in bios and it's the same as the asus probe.. but then again, don't they work on the same probe?? after my new hs and cleaning out everything, if the temps aren't down to at least 65, i guess i'll RMA the cpu.. do u think i can RMA the mobo as well and get a new one? maybe the burned parts are now defective(assuming it turns out to be burned than dusty).. these will be covered by warranty, right?

thanks EVERYONE for all of your inputs!! you guys are awesome.. if everything turns out well i'll flip out and do a little dance~ i guess this event inspired me to be more comp savvy =)

The replies to this post are toooooooooo funny!

Seriously it sounds like the CPU is toast (pun intended). It's doing exactly what a Celery 300A processor I once had did after I tried to push it past 500MHz - thermally running away.

I doubt even Liquid Nitrogen would keep it cool enough to run now...

Return it to place of purchase and hope they'll give you an exchange. If not then start over from scratch with AMD equipment - You can kill it just as dead by not securing the HSF properly BUT it's cheaper to replace and runs just as well!

*chuckle*

First off to elaborate on cidaemon, you dont need it, look up how to disable the microsoft indexing service and you wont have to worry about it anymore. I had problems a while ago with cidaemon putting my comp at a constant 100% load whenever I transferred or deleted large files, so I turned it off.

It sounds to me like you have a mounting problem, or are not applying the AS5 correctly. Look at AS5's instructions, and make sure you mount the HS properly.
