Hey Everyone,
I recently purchased a 'Metal Gear Box Substance" dual USB 2.0/firewire external 3.5 inch hard disk enclosure.
I have used enclosures in the past, and the setup has always been straight forward.
1. Set hard drive to master
2. Install drive into enclosure, and connect power and IDE cables.
3. Plug in firewire or USB cable into computer, and power on the drive.
Using the USB cable, Windows XP recognizes the drive as a USB mass storage device, and everything works perfectly. I am able to format and partition the drive using Windows XP disk management, and I can write and read from the disk with ease.
However, if I attempt to use firewire, the device is detected as "Prolific PL3507 Combo Device (1394-ATAPI rev 1.10) IEEE 1394 SBP2 Device".
In other words, Windows XP uses its built-in driver, and sees the device as a non mass-storage device. I cannot see the hard drive in disk manager, nor can I access it from anywhere else.
The chipset manufacturer, Prolific, includes drivers for "mass-storage recognization" only for Windows 98/ME ONLY! They claim that Windows 2000 and XP should recognize the device as a hard disk.
So, my question is, how the hell do I get this thing to work. I have about 5 different USB devices already crowding my USB 2.0 bus, and I would prefer to utilize the firewire in my system (..especially since the only other device connected to one of my firewire ports is my Panasonic MiniDV cam.).
Do any of you have any suggestions? Is there anyway to force a generic IEEE 1394 mass storage driver into the system? Since the manufacturer has not released drivers for Windows 2K/XP under the assumption that these OS' should support the device right out of the box, I can't even get support from them.
My only other option is to send the unit back, but I don't want to wait another few weeks for a different brand replacement.
Any assistance would be much appreciated.
Thanks.
