There is a new trailer for Sony’s PlayStation Home at GameTrailers today. PlayStation Home is supposed to be the answer to Xbox Live and it looks pretty cool so far, it will be interesting to see how it actually performs with thousands of people trying to “mingle” at the same time.

I find this interesting. Didn't Nintendo say they were going to be doing that at E3 last year? or something along the same line where the character you create walks around to "mingle" with other people?

Didn't 3D chat rooms like...die off a long time ago? How bout we find me an online game to play? I don't wanna mingle...I wanna fuckin play. Knowing Sony they'll overcharge for this too.

Well, it is supposed to be free...and...with Sony's lack of online support in the past, this is a huge step in the right direction! If it is continually developed as they say it will be, I have hope it will turn out to be pretty cool.

As it sits right now...the PS3 is sorely lacking in this area. The company has the resources, thankfully they are finally using them.

Only way I see this being cool if they somehow made it a huge mmrpg. Would love to hunt down people in it. Hell I would buy a ps3 for that reason.

I mean how cool would it be to make it do that?

Agree 100%. I currently don't like the PS3 as it stands for a multitude of reasons, but this is definitely a step towards what a "next gen" console should be. Combine this with some of the resolution fixes and the perceived steep price and they may start to get some converters.

I'm just curious how one would go about finding another person to play with. With the current standard you're launching the game and looking at a list of servers with raw information. Very fast, very straight forward. Will that option still exist or would this virtual world be the only way to find fellow gamers to go play a session of ... well ... anything.

Secondly, like WoW, EQ, and so forth ... what happens when you're dealing with overcrowding of avatars in the space available. As we know from MMORPG's, creating more space isn't necessarily going to help because people crowd the more popular areas.

My questions are pessimistic but I can see a very cool future in this route ... *IF* ... someone does it right.

This looks pretty neat. The usual flames are amusing though. I cant wait for this.

Looks nice, didn't have time to read the article but just saw the SS.

Reminded me of Phantasy Star Online's multiplayer.

Hopefully sony won't botch this.

I am totally freaking out about this. I am gove love the PlayStation Home and this new LittleBigWorld
game sooo much. To quote Bender: "It's gonna be fun on the bun."

I think this is a great idea for a virtual chat room, but I see the underlying "greed" for Sony, as anything other than the basic features will be $$$$.

For full blown games, not sure how well this would work for matchmaking, but more details would help. Also hopefully there will be shortcuts to get to places as anyone who has played an MMORPG, having to hoof it to one place to another blows. Maybe Sony will sell you a scooter?

Will wait and see, some nice ideas, but right now it's a dog and pony show. After dual HDMI and other Sony promises, taking with a grain of salt. But since there is $$$$ to be made from this, I give it good odds it will appear, just not sure how truly useful it will be for gaming. Socializing, I think will be it's true calling.

My only concern about this is who effectively porn and/or adult content will be controlled. I
wouldn't mine the freedom of being able to decorate my private space with whatever I want
(boobies!) and I want to be able to talk about whatever I want in private, but since there are
kids all around that kind of stuff needs to be kept out of public areas, just like it is in real life
(most of the time).

I am sure you are right about basic features being free, premium being $$$ they already alluded to the in the trailer about buying more things for your avatar and virtual house. As it is, Sony is bending over and taking a big loss on each console. Shoveling out more free content might not be smart for them. So I see a basic "home" account being an avatar, limited clothes and a condo with no furnishings. If you want to bring your online friends over to your bare to the bone crib, fine...but all the "cool people" will have cool stuff / clothing / music / movies.

You will cave to the peer pressure...you will work longer and harder to have money for your online identity. Who cares if your eatin Ramen IRL...you gots a phat crib at PlayStation Home. :D

I've been quite disappointed with Sony and the PS3 up till now but I have a feeling Sony is about to turn the corner. I hope so. I'm just excited to see what all 3 players can do in this "Next Gen" game.

looks promising but just like any online community only as good as it's members. Nice that you can set up private or public spaces, will have to see if it spawns a mini industry with invitation only parties space for sale etc.

I'm sure Sony seeing what people pay for in the virtual world (EQ's, Second Life, WoW, etc..) for things to impress their virtual friends, I'm sure they are smelling the $$$$. Hopefully they will play smart with how much they charge. That will show their true colors in this new realm of theirs. But then hey if you can afford $600, you can pay more for your virtual space. Shoot didn't Ken say that people would work extra hours to own a PS3 even if it didn't have any games? Take on that 3rd job, so you can furnish your virtual room!

Too many users; their site is being hammered!

Can someone post this on youtube or something please?

On the downside is (and I think someone mentioned earlier) is the whole child protection from predators deal. As a father of three, I hope Sony takes this possibility into consideration, before bringing it online.

Gah, I never thought about that. I'm curious how they'll lock that down- otherwise this will just be another pressure point for the media and the pervs to exploit.

Had horrible thought, since there are private rooms, where the person can show videos and etc... Yeah this is worse than I thought. All the grief they have done over the PSP, and DS and the Wii internet/chat access, this is 100x worse.

Sony better lock it down good, or press and family groups will have a field day with this (though if Sony doesn't deal with it, then they have a right to be upset). Last thing I want is one of my kids getting invited to some perv's virtual apt. to show him some "movies" or "pictures".

This is a really cool concept, hope Sony can pull it off (safely). This may be the turning point, right after they drop the price.
