playing quicktime video without quicktime

i know there are codecs to play realplayer without using realplayer..

can anyone reccomend one that lets me play quicktime files without using quicktime.. i am talking mov and mp4 specifically..

mp4 can also be played with VideoLan - it might do .mov as well.

thanks.. i was looking on sourceforge.. but they were mostly for linux.. and i don't trust other stuff out there usually...
