I'm liking it. My wife would kill be because we just baught a new house but she'd get over it.
 
i think the real question is, How many people would actually pay 500 and up for this keyboard?
i know i would'nt, thats about 8 lapdances, 40 12 packs, 2 cartons of cigs and food money(for the week)

C'mon, those are hard working girls... you have to tip better than that. I'm thinking it's about 4 lap dances and an hour in the champagne room. ;)

Looking at that...hmm....the no letters on the keys seems pretty stupid and silly to me....But I really am interested in the idea of the groups of weighted key-springs!...that's a very interesting idea...How well does it work in practice??
 
It would be cool if you could hit a button and it would scroll the same information as an LCD or VFD Display (MBM, Up Time, Clock, Weather, Winamp Visualizations ex…), I could even see game maps being displayed on it.

You would have to ask yourself what you would pay for a good LCD and keyboard on top of that OLED tech is supposed to be cheaper to manufacture then anything. I would like to know how long before you start having problems with it, $500.00 and 6 months down the road before you know it keys stop lighting up and shit like that (the more stuff there is, the more stuff there is to break). Give it some time and I would get one!!!! ;)
 
I looked around the rest of the site cause I'm really interested in HCI (Human-Computer Interaction) and I don't think I'm the only one who'd look at this heating unit and think what a sweet case mod it'd be ;)

Like I said in a subsequent post, I'll agree the label-less keys is somewhat pretentious... however, when forced to type by touch instead of hunting and picking your speed will usually increase considerably. Think about how much quicker you'd learn a foreign language if you were in a country where that's all that was spoken.

The weighted keys though:
On my Das I type about 120 WPM
On a similar Micro$oft keybaord without weighted keys its about 110 WPM
On a ergonomic split keyboard it's about 90 WPM

The biggest thing you'll notice though is how much longer you can type before fatigue (especially on the outter fingers) sets in. Its really just a lot more comfortable and worth the few dollars extra compared to similar QWERTY keyboards.

I'd love to try the keyboard with alternate key positions or the other that I saw with four way hat switches, supposedly both are even better for speed and lessening fatigue but I don't feel the need to learn a new way of typing.
 
Hmm...I wonder -- are there any other keyboards with weightings like that?

That keyboard isn't worth 10WPM. Buy a black keyboard and paint over the keys if it suits you, but the money can be better spent.
 
Since this turned into a keyboard-merit thread, I'll ring in:

The IBM Model M keyboard was the best keyboard manufacturered. Ever. I have an original 1987 example. You can feel the quality in the buckling spring keys. And at 5 pounds, you won't mistake it for a $5 CompUSA special.

But the darn things are as Fugly as sin. It looks just like it came from the mainframe era.

So what to do? I bought a newly-manufactured example in black with silver keys from Unicomp, who bought out Lexmark, who was itself spun-off from the original Lexington, Kentucky IBM factory that pumped out the real ones back in the day!

Oh yes. Sweet. The Optimus keyboard looks pimp, but key action will suck just as bad as the OEM crap that comes with any other store bought system.

And that sucker will be EXPENSIVE - if it even sees the light of day. Russia? Come on, let's get real. Unless M$ or some other mega-corp buys it out, I'd be very surprised if you'd ever be able to buy one at any price.

Considering I spent $70 on a Micro$oft keyboard previously, gaining 10 WPM basically for free is worth it.

Now I'll grant you that the Ms keyboard had a little scroll wheel on the side and stupid "hot keys" (neither of which were ever used) and the Das does not have those extras.

However, considering I never used those silly "features" and don't really care how pretty my keyboard is (I want a functional and comfortable input device for a fair price, not a $500 keyboard with LCDs on each key and buttons that look completely flat and uncomfortable.

I'm very pleased with the Das and feel that a 10 WPM increase (not to mention MUCH more comfortable typing) is more than worth the investment of $70 for a quality keyboard instead of spending $40 for a Yahoo! keyboard from Wal*Mart or $15 for a salvaged Dell.
