I was wondering, after i get a new video card, should I use my 8500gt in the pci-e 1x slot as a physx card, or buy a pci card for a physx card?

An 8500GT is really a minimalistic PhysX card. Depending on your new videocard (GTX260 or better) it may even bottleneck the framerate. It depends on the resolutions at which you play, though.
 
With the vid card right now, i usually don't go above 1280x1024, because some of the newer games don't really run on it too good. I really don't mind eye candy, as long as a game is playable. after I get a new machine, i still probably won't go that high in resolution. I'm an old gamer, and I think it's ridiculous how gamers now days want more of everything. Higher resolution, More eye candy. Better physics. It's kinda sad when I see people ask if a brand spanking new video card that just came out, that'd kick my cards ass, and they ask if it'll run CSS at the highest resolution with no less than 90 fps. it's ridiculous! lol. sorry, i'm rambling, thanks for the reply!
 
Everyone is entitled to his opinion but really, why wouldn't we want better everything? It's called progress you know. ;)
As for Physx, you could try it but its a very weak card and like someone said before, it could bottleneck the system.
What card are you planning to get?

So using the 8500 as a physx card bad idea. i'll keep it as a backup, or sell it. I don't know what kind of card I want. I'm currently underway right now, in the middle of the pacific, so i'm a little behind the technology curve. Before I left, the 260 core 216 just came out, and was in my budget range, but now I'm sure that it's bigger brother's are around my budget range. I also just got word from the wife that I can pretty much get a new system when I get back home, so we'll see how things go then. I'm an nvidia fanboy, so I'll probably get an Nvidia card. mid to high end. (260-295) depending on the price. cheers!

You can always test it but based on the cards you are considering to buy, I am almost sure the 8500gt would hurt instead of help.
Let us know how it turns out when you get this done though. :)
 
I think it would help for games. There is a post on here that says the better the card the better frames but it also shows that any card is better than no card. It uses the 9x00 series cards in the testing though so you will have to check on it yourself.
 
But what if he gets a GTX280 or higher? I remember seen tests where a 8600gt actually hurt performance compared to letting the 280 do the job.
Of course, it depends on how busyg the 280 is...so resolution, eye candy and the game will make a big difference.
