Physical Ram Drive

I remember seeing on a thread a link about a drive that was made up of physical ram. It was 16gig and cost $698. It was a board that had an IDE connector.

I can't remember the name of it or the company. I think it's like hyperion, hyperios or something like that. I think it was a german company.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about?
 
When I worked as a tech at Lockheed 20 years ago we used to run tests on boards that were physical RAM. If I remember right it was 1GB per board, they slid into a chassis that held 20 - 24 boards. They were for military use, not sure exactly what for though. The boards had EMC stamped on them.

Back then they probably cost a couple hundred grand a gig.
 
so $700 for the device...another $2200 for 16Gig of RAM...I think I will stay with my old hard drive :D

Not really. Yes, it's better than any hard drive, but not as nice as a normal software RAM drive could be (although since it has an onboard battery, you can treat it as a hard drive for persistence through reboots [not long-term turnoff though]). Discussion here. Basically, this type thing is ideal for servers with a ton of database access, but games that require fast loading of large amounts of textures into memory, it loses its edge.

Since it uses an IDE interface (UATA-100 with the latest ver.), it's limitted by the IDE spec.

The only thing it excels at is access times (though I'd imagine they're far higher than just plonking the ram into your motherboard) and operations per second.

I think it would be preferable to just get a ginourmous server board, put in a few gigs of ram, and put everything into a software ramdisk on bootup.
Nanoseconds access time rather hundreds of nanoseconds, and 2.1 gigabytes/second of bandwidth rather than 100 megabytes/second.
