This new flexible display technology being developed by LG Philips is pretty impressive. Now all they need to do is make them cheap enough and start mass producing them and they are all set.

LG Philips has come up with another idea. Instead of making pixels out of OLEDs, it has designed them out of oil and water contained in tiny plastic cells connected to plastic electrodes. The oil, which is opaque, floats on the water and obscures a colored surface beneath.

hmmm that sounds interesting, but my first thought is "what kind of oil?"
If this is another project relying on fossil-fuels, than I say no thanks.

Even if it did underground oil, why the negativity towards oil? Your objection sounds naive and childish.

Like calling someone out for expressing their opinion?

Personally, I agree that there's probably easier and more reliable methods (if not cheaper) to produce the same effect. Until I know more about this, I'll pass as well. Not that I have the money to go bandwagoning anyway... :(

It's not about calling someone out for expressing their opinion. I have no problem with someone expressing their opinion. However, the opinion that Xappie expressed about not using this technology if it was fossil fuel based is based on what from him? Is it a feeling of negativity that he has about fossil fuels? Does he dislike oil based anything? Cars, cooking, grease, soaps, detergents, plastics, etc. etc.? Since nearly everything that is used in the world is oil based, wouldn't that be a little overreaching on his part to express his opinion that he wouldn't use a video technology based on the materials that are required to produce it.

I'm trying to understand where that level of naiveté comes from and I also think that an opinion should be based on facts, not feelings and conjecture. Afterall, he said, I read it and I disagree with his feelings on it and I'd like to know, by having him clarify it further, what he means by his statement or opinion.

I only meant that there are already enough products in the world that require fossil fuel technology, without adding more. Especially for something like an entertainment device.

I kind of agree but looking at the whole picture, a tv would use considerably less than say a car, which is also an entertainment device...

The usage is no different than building your current monitor for all intents and purposes. If it does the same job better, and lasts longer its a win all around.

Yes, and isn't it safe to say that society in general is trying to find ways to make them use less fuel than ever. Or even none at all! :)
