Persistent stuttering with DVD playback

Hope somebody can advise. When I first formatted and installed the basic software on the laptop in my sig, DVD playback was fine. I've gradually installed a few other apps and updated the Catalyst driver to Omega ones. Recently the sound has become appalling when watching DVDs, with really bad, continuous stauttering. I initially blamed the Omega drivers, as I've heard of them causing such issues for some people. I cannot directly attribute the problem to these for sure for three reasons. Firstly, I've tried removing them (following a thorough removal procedure I found on a forum elsewhere) and installing the official Catalyst 4.12 instead. Secondly, I cannot be sure that the problem started as soon as I installed the Omegas (stupid, I should have checked immediately) as it was many days before I next tried to watch a DVD. Thirdly, the problem does not occur when playing back DVD files I've ripped to the hard disk, it only occurs when playing from a DVD disc in the drive.

All the DVDs I own are Region 2 (I'm based in the UK) and are original discs (not copies).

Before I go through the headache and tedium of reformatting and starting from scratch, can anybody suggest what I might try to cure it? A quick Google search has procured nothing of any use, except perhaps checking that the IDE channels are set to DMA rather than PIO. The only other possible culprit I can think of is Alcohol 120%, which has set up a virtual drive. Could this be causing some kind of conflict with the physical, internal drive?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as formatting and setting up again is a real chore these days.

alcohol 120% i doubt.

So you uninstalled omega and only have cat 4.12 on and its still doing it? Maybe its the drive itself?
 
Entirely possible I suppose. I guess there's no easy way to test that, other than reformatting and testing with a fresh install of Windows and the proven-to-work-before drivers that came with the laptop. I'll persist a little longer before resorting to that, but thanks for taking the time to contribute a suggestion.

Hmm, looking at the driver details in Device Manager it says they are produced by Roxio. Roxio's CD/DVD Creator software (including drag to disc) was one of the apps I've iinstalled fairly recently and wasn't on the computer when the DVDs played back fine. I've tried the option to roll the drivers back toa previous version, but it says no previous drivers have existed. This is Bull because, as I mentioned, I didn't install Roxio software until fairly recently. I've tried using the update driver function, but Windows reports nothing more compatible available. Can I force it to use Windows XP's default drivers in any way?
