I have been doing a fair bit of reading of reviews and threads and it seems to me that there is not a massive amount of difference in performance between the X800's and 6800's. So that rules out making a buying decision based on performance in current games and benches.

I guess this leaves other features like SM3.0 etc...

would this be a valid assessment of the state of things?
 
That's one reason.

Another is price. You can get the Geforce 6800GT for $400, and overclock it to 6800U speeds.
 
cool...stock is the next issue i guess...i might stick it out with my 9800XT for now then upgrade in a month or so...
