Hi,
On consideration, the performance requirements of a virtualized environment strike me as being different enough that I need to reconsider my choice of CPU for my server build. That is, the characteristics of a virtualized environment may mean that it's not a no brainer to go with intel processors when building a VMWare server.

Can anyone offer an informed opinion on this? Is AMD worth more than cursory consideration for this role?

The only thing I'll say is that if you're purchasing this for an enterprise setting, considering how much the software alone costs, buy the most hardware you possibly can. This assumes you're going for the more expensive vSphere setups. 7 grand for a dual socket server is a hell of alot to spend on software alone so skimping money by getting a slower processor or 16GB ram vs 32 or 64+ just doesn't make sense.

Can't tell you whether you should go AMD or Intel, but if it helps we chose Intel.
 
I'm not asking in order to save money, though it is a fringe benefit. Rather I'm wondering whether virtualized environments like vware are sensitive to memory bandwidth. That is where AMD's operons are particularly strong.
