pentium M pin configuration

i keep reading that there are socket 478 and 479 pentium M's, what is the acutal diffrence between these two types of mobile cpu's? and what motherboard are they compatible with?

I was wondering that as well, the P-M's on the egg I've seen are socket 478, so are they compatible with all socket 478 motherboards?

Pentium Ms come in two forms. One is a micro flip-chip pin grid array (Micro-FCPGA) package which has 478 pins arranged in a way that is mechanically incompatible with the traditional Socket 478. The other is a micro flip-chip ball grid array (Micro-FCBGA) package with 479 balls. It's my understanding that all non-permanently-soldered Pentium Ms use the same "Socket 479" mating system.

Yeap, the actual socket a Pentium M goes into has 479 socket "holes" but only mates with 478 of them.

micro FCBGA socket 479 are mostly for the LV/ULV (low voltage/ultra low voltage) segment which are clocked lower than the regular P-Ms.
