It's a 2.66 smithfield dual core on a 533mhz fsb.

This guy at xtremesystems has it o'ced to 4.1, 3.9 on the stock cooler

The processor does support speedstep.

So if this guy can get it to 4.1...who knows. It can't be running that hot.

This processor seems to have some potential for someone on a budget. If I'm understanding this right, the multi is 14-20x. Bandwidth choking is not a prob even if you have to go 14x200 for a slight oc.

A true underdog, or POS, depending on your POV. But, it's got some cool posibilities.
 
This is a great deal. Intel is really driving the dual core market with their affordable cpus which have great ocing ability.

Yes, I can only imagine what people are going to do with that kind of processing power...hopefully they will be crunching data for a good cause. :)

The 14x-20x multiplier 805 was an ES at HKEPC. I don't understand how the 805 supports speedstep. On the other 8x0 models (830 and up), the CPU drops to 2.8GHz. Intel states speedstep is "Not available on 820." :p It's probably a typo on the 805 sSpec page.

Yeah, i'm kind of jealous because the X2 3800+ I bought was the cheapest dual core processor I could find at the time ($230 retail boxed). I would have been happy with the 805 if it hit at least 3.7GHz and it would have saved me almost $100. :(

Same as the 820. Not enough information to draw a conclusion. It may be one factor in the binning process. But then, how does one explain that all Dothans including the celery versions had the same Thermal Spec - 100° C?

Probably not a typo. 820 doesn't have Speedstep. It's already at 14x, it can't go any lower. 805 is 20x133. It should have speedstep to save power by dropping down to 14x.

LOL! You should have no regrets considering what you paid for your chip. I just think it's cool that with this processor you don't have to buy a uber-mobo to overclock. As long as you can change the multiplier and hit 200fsb, you can probably overclock this chip.

Actually, that is enough information. The B0 stepping 805 and 820 have a lower thermal spec than the B0 stepping 830 and 840 (which run 35W TDP hotter). Intel is binning those processors for some reason. Mobile chips are different and I don't see what it has to do with a particular Smithfield B0 stepping with 2 different thermal specs, one for the 805/820 and another for the 830/840. :p

I think you're right right on the speedstep thing :D . There's no reason why this chip should get speedstep when the 820 doesn't. Wishful thinking!

From the tech sheets, it seems t-spec is a function of thermal guideline based on a reference cooler, ideally, the boxed one. Thermal guideline is not really tdp at a certain frequency. And tdp is a rough measure anyway. So, it's just the binning process, whatever Intel decides and something we can't know until people start testing these retail chips.

Unlocking the lower multipliers in this case is pretty much like the situation before they started locking the multipliers. It's not good to have shady integrators and vendors shafting the consumer. But, I agree. The lower multipliers should be unlocked for all their mainstream chips.
 
14 is the absolute minimum that the prescott's clockgen can do. You have to look to Cedar Mill / Presler for anything below that.

I paid *more* than that for my *slower* Northwood-C (P4 2.6 S478) two years ago. At this pricing, it's basically a Northwood-killer. While you can't do SLI or Crossfire (the FSB support is too slow for nForce, Intel Express, or Radeon Xpress) you can either migrate to PCIe, or even stick with AGP and DDR with the chipsets that support the 805. Overclocking this processor to 200FSB (4.0ghz) should be easy. Then it would be able to run SLI or Crossfire. The only thing that I don't like is that its based on the 8xx series smithfield core and not the newer 9xx Presler core. That would be awesome to have a 905 :D

I don't really understand how this processor would make a good transitional chip from a s478 system. No matter what way you approach an upgrade like this, you'll need a new motherboard, cpu and memory. I'd don't think I would buy this processor if I was upgrading, I would just go straight for the 9xx series processors. However, if I was building a system on a budget and wanted to overclock I would definatly consider this.

It may actually be a re-binned 840 (or even 850), both of which support SpeedStep. The Pentium-II 350s were re-binned P-II 400s for the most part; however, because of a rare (then) pricing quirk, they cost *less* than the P-II 333. (When the P-II 350 was introduced, I took major advantage of this pricing quirk and built my then-new system around this CPU, as opposed to the P-II 333, as I had already chosen a 440BX-chipset motherboard for future-proofing.)

I've never heard of anybody *underclocking* the FSB of the higher-end Intel, nForce, or Radeon Xpress Intel Edition motherboards to the 533 MHz the 805 requires. Also, the 805, in addition to being a Northwood-killer, is also, to a larger extent, a Celeron-killer (especially the single-core Celerons) as the 805 is indeed priced in typical Celeron territory. Can anyone who has a motherboard based on one of these chipsets PM me if they have *proof conclusive* that the chipsets support such underclocking?

Not necessarily memory, as some boards that support the 805 take plain ordinary DDR (and even support AGP 8X). And I was thinking in terms of budget upgraders with my sub-$300 upgrade package. I didn't have overclocking in mind, because I have no idea how this budget dual-core would hold up with an 800 MHz FSB (which is also why I eliminated nForce4 Intel Edition and Intel's own 955Express/975 Express chipsets from consideration; Intel itself says their 975X "BadAxe" won't swallow the 805 or any other processor with a 533 MHz FSB). If the 805 can handle an FSB overclock (and the BadAxe can certainly do the fiddling) then an 805/BadAxe setup could handle 3 GHz on air with the stock cooling (200MHz x 15).

I have 1 GB of DDR400 (PNY OPTIMA) in dual-channel mode I'm trying to hold on to for now (and my AIW 9700 Pro AGP 8x). And the VD1X will swallow the 805 easily, and with a BIOS update will swallow even the P-D 920. That is precisely what I am referring to by a *transition easer*; you can upgrade on *your* schedule, as opposed to trying to hit a moving target like Conroe (which still hasn't fully spec'd out in terms of motherboard requirements; most of the tech press are saying that Conroe will require completely new motherboards). With the VD1X, you can upgrade to Smithfield (and then Presler) for $500 (that's the cost of *both* CPUs plus the board itself) taking *all* your existing hardware with you. Or you can simply go to Smithfield now, then later, after things have shaken down with Conroe, migrate there. However, even a Smithfield setup is dual-core and 64-bit ready (which, of course, isn't the case with Northwood-C or Prescott). Has anybody compared same-speed Smithfields and Prescotts, especially in a board like the P5-VD1X, which can take either? HT vs. Dual-core should make for an interesting showdown.
