Is the Pentium D 64 bit capable?

I know it says EM64T support, is this the same as 64 bit computing since it's 'Extended Memory'?

I thought there were a few instructions missing because Intel copied AMD's early standard rather than the release standard?

To my understanding, Intel will definitely remedy this in their upcoming CPUs. This would mean that Intel's IA32e is similar enough to run XP64 and other 64-bit x86 apps, but it is not identical to AMD64.

Intel has a new core revision out shortly that adds in the two missing instructions.

The 2 missing instructions were new fast task switching instructions and do not affect any applications. It's only a minor concern to operating system writers.

robberbaron: AMD removed those 2 instructions from the x86-64 specs as mentioned above. It was only restored when some kernel programmer complained. There are at least 2 old threads that detail what happened.

I just wanted to make sure, I work at CircuitCity and they had an Intel Rep. come in to talk to us about the Pentium D she said it DOES NOT support 64 Bit instructions...

Lol, classic....

I've been telling everyone else at CircuitCity that the Rep was wrong, and that the Pentium D's DO support 64 bit; they just reversed engineered AMD64, but no one believes me, lol.

Intel did not reverse engineer anything. Both Intel and AMD have cross licensing agreements.
