I have an abit AS8 motherboard with a Pentium 4 2.8 ghz 800 mhz fsb. I bought a vantec gsn-7015 heatsink. I thought this will be fine to cool it but when I went to turn it on the heat alarm went off and shut down. I had enough to time to go to look at the temps and saw it was around 100* C and rising. I put a thin layer of silicon paste but it still overheats. I made sure it wasent a power issue by unplugging the hard drives and cd-rom. So I still dont know what the problem could be.

Heatsink not mounted properly is the first thing to check..
Also you removed any TIM (thermal interface material) that might be on the heatsink first right?
And what kind of thermal grease did you use? (not that it should matter any decent stuff should be fine)

i think i found the problem. the heatsink is for socket 778 and the cpu is 775. besides that the heatsink is is so big length wise its hitting a part on the motherboard like one of the round short silver things and not allowing it to make full contact with the cpu.
another solution would be to mail me the board and proc... yeah, that'd work.MemoryInAGarden

Are there any good socket 775 cooling solutions out yet though?
The Asus Ice Star is out and I have never looked back since getting one. Its an absolute monster heatsink I admit but it seriously sorted out my 775 560 temps.
On my 3.6e I was getting 40 idle and 55-60 load with the intel heatsink and using the ice star I dropped 10c off idle and 10-15 off load temps. You have to check if it will fit in your system as some people have had probs with it touching the psu.
