ok quick rundown

i have my computer hiding in a closet in my room to make it quiet. however in the warming summer months its been getting really toasty

my question is this:

if i were to cut a hole in the wall of the closet and mount a rather large peltier heatpump in the hole (cold side in, hot side exposed to not so cold air in the attic) would this cool the closet at all?

i would ofcource add large heatsinks to either side to help absorbe and disipate heat on either side.

i immagine it comes down to the delta(t) between the closet and the attic (almost the same temp really)

im not expecting low temps just better then what they are now.


size is no issue
power is no issue
workmanship is no issue
money is an issue proportional to the effectiveness (ie: if it works ill spend money if it does nothing ill save the cash)

I guess my question would be why don't you just install a normal window Air Conditioner in the wall between the attic and the closet. It would most likely be a lot easier to set up, be cheaper, and less expensive. That is, if it is really that important that you get the closet a lot cooler.
 
peltiers are not good at cooling large areas. the largest successful application i have seen them used in are those coolers you use in cars that need to be plugged into the cig lighter.

so in other words, your idea wont work well at all. i'd be supprized to see more than 2 degrees difference in the closet.
 
Peltiers are inefficient, they generally use two to three times are much power as they move heat.

Let's say the computer is dumping 250 watts of heat into the closet. Your TECs would cosume 500 to 750 watts to move that heat. That means the heatsink on the hot side would have to hande 750 to 1000 watts (heat moved plus power used); that'll be a monster heatsink. And of course, you have to pay for your TEC's electricity -- 50 to 100 per month, depending on the local rates.

How bout water cooling it? Have the rad outside the closet, maybe somewhere nice and cool....
