Any news on PCIE 3.0 32x link, if we will see it before the end of the year, and or any news on cards that will be supporting the new bus speed?

Not for a while yet: link. Also, I think PCI-E 3.0 will keep "16x" as the maximum number of lanes per slot, just as they did with PCI-E 2.0. The base 1x rate will simply increase to 8 GT/s
 
Well i know only a few of the current top cards are using the bandwidth of 2.x while running at resolutions of 25x16, but i thought it was neat to see a add on bus that has throughput numbers that match some of the current CPU buses.
 
Given that current cards barely utilize beyond x8 2.0 (2-5% performance increase going to x16), I'm not really too concerned with double or quadrupling the bandwidth.

That is why i was also asking if there was any thing coming out that would tax that new bus standard.

Maybe dual GPU cards could do that with a 16x 2.0 slot, but for anything else it's overkill and just opens room for future development.

Perhaps ultra-high end fibre channel cards could utilize it.

There's nothing coming out thats 4 or 5 times as fast as current generation cards, no. Like Red Falcon said, maybe some kind of fibre channel adapter, but not video cards.

I question whether they will ever make a video card that will exceed PCI-E 2.0 bandwidth. GPUs might merge back into the CPU before that happens. PCI-E 1.0 has been out since 2004, and only now, six years later, are we seeing cards that exceed its bandwidth.
 
Was just wondering since every thing lately seems to be a rehash with slight improvement in terms of GPU computational power or memory bandwidth, but no huge advancements in terms of what would call for a new bus like PCIE 3.0. So i was just seeing if any one knew of any thing coming out that would utilize it.

I'm sure that very high end server equipment and many components for supercomputers may start to utilize the port bandwidth for specialized components.

It may not be beneficial just yet to the consumer/prosumer, but it may benefit more professional applications at the moment.
 
One thing is for sure PCIE 3.0 is going to be mega expensive when it first comes out. 2012 before even a hint of a budget board using it.

They will have to introduce a new standard to handle the 300+ watt cards being produced. 2.0 by definition only covers 300 watts. I mean in real world practice its not a problem, but there are certain hoops Nvidia and ATI have to jump through to putt a 300 watt + card out there. Like the 5970 which was downclocked for this very purpose.

They could probably just let cards run two 8 pin pci-e connectors and make no other changes than saying a 375 watt max, or 450+ if you have 3 connectors to the card. Most likely they will redo the electrical connections to provide more power through the mobo, which in fact some of the high end enthusiast boards have done.
 
Don't count on a 32x link too much. Be hell to put something that large on the board. Remember that each "x" is literally another parallel PCIe lane. So you can see how wide a 16x slot is, double that and that's what it'd take for 32x.

Yeah that was one aspect i was thinking about, and was speculating on how that could be resolved by figuring out a way to stack the pins in the riser, one on top of another as a way to get around making the slot full length.
