PCI Express and application performance, where is it?

I've seen reports on these forums and elsewhere that Pci-E hasn't yet produced dramatic gaming performance increases. So it's understood that we just have to wait for hardware and/or software improvements to see a big improvement for gaming. But what about non-gaming speed? I thought video editing and file compression and apps like that were supposed to have blazing increases in performance. Those of you in dvd compression or any field like that would have seen reports of this if Pci-E was giving a significant boost in movie file or any file compression. I want the non-gaming apps to have big boosts in speed - I want to see Pci-E succeed. Hoping I'd see if any techs here have seen it yet. And btw of course I want to see it for gaming too.

What exactly does PCI Express have to do with that? You have a video card or other PCI-E device that does video editing and file compression? Those kinds of tasks are CPU orientated.

PCI Express is a bus. If your task(movie editting, file compression) is going between the CPU, memory, and a hard drive and nothing is going out over PCI-E then you aren't going to see any performance increase whatsoever(as a result of PCI-E). If you have some sort of video editting card or file compression card that was really being bottlenecked by the pci bus then perhaps a PCI-E version of the card would give you a performance increase. I doubt many people around here have PCI-E file compression cards, though. :p I've not seen any reports like that, but I'd love to see them to figure out what is going on.
