PCI-E vs AGP?

What's the performance difference between a PCI-E vid card and an AGP one, assuming the same gpu? I'm in need of a video card (my 9800pro died), and am thinking of either a 6600GT or 6800. My backup TI4200 is a bit lacking, so if there's not a huge difference I'll just get the AGP instead of waiting for a readily available PCIE mobo for A64.

I'm sure this subject has been covered before somewhere, but please don't flame me for bringing it back up.

Currently you probably wouldn't ever tell a difference, but in a few months (new games and stuff) that extra bandwidth may become useful
 
Currently, there is no difference.

PCI-E's bandwidth will only come in to play for more powerful GPUs in the future.

Incorrect. New games won't make a difference. Only more powerful video cards.

i was saying the new games will utilize the larger bandwidth :confused: :confused:
 
The total bandwidth of AGP4x 1GB/s isn't even being fully used by the top end videocards. AGP 8x 2.1GB/s is more than enough for a while. PCI-E x16 ~4GB/s isn't going to be useful for a while. By then you'll have needed a new CPU, Mobo, and GPU so AGP is still the most cost effective solution.
 
Heh, 4 replies in 6 minutes, quick even for this forum. Anyway, thanks guys, it seems AGP is the better option at this point.
Now the only question is where to get a deal on a 6800. :D

You don't understand. Current high-end video cards do not saturate AGP 8x.
Running at full tilt, a 6800Ultra/X800XT will not fill up all the bandwidth on an AGP 8x bus. Therefore, if you've got double that amount of bandwidth with PCI-E 16x, it makes no difference, the current cards aren't powerful enough to fill up the extra bandwidth.

yes they are, all you need is a game or application that saturates the bus, heavy texture load etc... or full streaming HD content etc....

How can you saturate the bus with content if the card cant make enough data transfers to saturate it??????? The core has to be able to use the bandwidth up with data I/O and there's no card, even when its core is overloaded, that can do that right now. Even 3dlabs Wildcat Realizms with 512MB GDDR3 and powerful cores use AGP 8X buses just fine.
