Okay, this is another n00b question, but I got confused by an ad I read for a power supply that said it featured:

- 4 Serial ATA connectors, PCI Express graphic card power connectors

Now, do SATA hard-drives and PCI-express cards require different connectors than IDE hard drives and other graphics cards? I thought from my reading that the PSU supplies +12V, +5V, and +3.3V and I assumed these would power all the different computer components. Am I wrong, and it is more differentiated than that?

they are not the typical molex (4 pin) connectors that you would think of, they are different shapes, for instance a PCI-E has 6 pins.

Well, if these parts require special connectors, how do you know what PSU to get? No PSU listing ever talks about them (except for that one case), so how do you know if a PSU is going to work for your components?

Power supply listings DO "talk" about those special connectors IF they have them. If they do't, they probably don't have them or your shopping at a website with horrible product listings.

Well, I had been looking at Newegg, but that means that most must not have SATA or PCI-express connectors which seems odd if these are the new technologies. Do the cards and drives come with the necessary adapters?

yeah most retail products come with adapters.

that being said, atx 2.0 power supplies should have both connectors (and most new power supplies are atx 2.0 or a little older)

I'll be buying a new PSU, mobo, etc, so I should be alright. I just got paranoid that I would buy new components and then not be able to hook them together. It sounds like SATA and a PCI-e graphics card are the way to go with a new build.

Let's make it easy on you... What kind of PSU are you looking at getting? Someone here will be able to let you know if there's SATA power connectors, I'm sure.

Also, it's only the RETAIL HDD's that come with a power adapter. Get an OEM drive, which is usually what you end up with buying from Newegg or eWiz unless specified otherwise, and you won't get an adapter.

Video cards are pretty much all retail box these days.
