K here goes...I talked my brother into upgrading his HP...he does photography and needs to make it faster and stuff. So he also wanted a 2.0 USB card. We got this one off newegg for 20 or so. http://www.ppa-usa.com/product_pages/usb/1578.htm I installed it fine but it wont run at 2.0...in the device Manager list the Univeral Serial Bus (USB) Controller has an error...when I try to install the drivers with it I get this error at the end of the installation:

The driver installation file for this device is missing a necessary file. This may be because the INF was written for Windows 95 or later. Contact your hardware vendor.

The device is suppsoed to be compatable with almost all OS's Win98/se, Win ME, Win 2000, Win XP. But the damn CD wouldnt even start to read in his computer...I opened it up on mine and transfered the files to his via a USB drive....If I can find an installation file or driver for the Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller i can fix it...but I cant seem to hunt one down. Now his computer hasnt been updated in a long time (probably why theres probs).

So who can help? Please...he's mad at me and I need to get this fixed for him...
 
why don't you go to the mfg's website download the drivers for windows xp or whatever version of windows your brother has. once you got them downloaded than copy them either to a floppy disk (if it fits) or to a cd-rom. now simply re-install the drivers on your bro's computer.
 
They dont have them available...HP's site is crap..IM probably just gonna gte him to update to SP2 they will be in there then i hope.
 
i was referring to the mfg'er of the USB add-on card.
by the way, for which versions of windows are there drivers on that CD that came with this card? Is there are seperate directory for each?
also, have you tried downloading the drivers from the site that you mentioned/linked?

This is the exact card and manufacturerer http://www.ppa-usa.com/product_pages/usb/1578.htm They have no availble downloads for that card. The drivers say win98 win 95 and win 2k3 but the documentation says XP is supported...the driver CD wouldnt even read in his computer (yes the drive works fine).

At this point im going to install SP2 and see if that does it which it should..
 
Yep, I saw the link but thought it would be worth a shot if MS had a version for XP.

Also the MS USB 2. driver.

You mentioned that you have a half installed SP1? That might be the problem since USB 2.0 needs drivers from SP1 or SP2. Best bet is to do exactly what you are planning on doing, install SP2. If it still does not recognize it after installing SP2. Go to hardware prop. and uninstall the device. Restart comp. and it should recognize the USB 2.0.

Bottom line, your drivers are toasted for USB and most likely from a botched install of SP1. My advice is to backup and wipe the thing, install SP2, then install the card and all should be well.
 
I'm thinking there's something not quite right hardware wise with those cards. That's the exact same card that shorted out my PCI slot and took down my power supply.

Granted, I think it was at least somewhat my fault, I definitally didn't expect the card to react as it did.
 
If you load SP2 it should load the drivers for the card. If it doesn't then you will need to go to Device manager and open the devisce and update the driver. IT should find one on the local hard drive.
