Ok here is what i am thinking...

3400 64bit becuase the 939s are soo expensive..is that a good choice?

a gig of corsair ram...what speed tho?

one raptor and one 100gb hard drive

and i am either going for the x800XT or the 6800..


The real question is tho...where do i get the x800xt or the 6800 at a decent price?
ill even settle for a pro at a decent price...everywhere i see it, it has been way over priced of what i have heard...


Any suggestions on the memory, MB, or CPU is welcome just keep in mind my limit is 2grand and i really dont want to spend all of it lol

I think either a 3400+ or a 3200+ is a fine choice for what it appears that you are doing. However, AMD is already switching up pin counts and reconfiguring things, so I would wait a little bit first before you commit to anything concrete.

On the RAM, yes, AMD systems beg for tight timings because they utilize less stages in their design. I would recommend either Corsair XMS PC3200DLL, Mushkin Level I Black PC3200, or Kingston HyperX PC3200. PC3200 or 400 Mhz (DDR) is the optimal speed in RAM for AMD based systems. Plus, that will leave you some decent headroom to overclock the processor and front side bus, if you choose to.

That Raptor will make for a fine OS drive, but I would bump up that storage drive to at least 160 GB's, if possible. If you are feeling saucy, I would snag a WD 250 GB drive. :D

Regarding the video card, it really depends on if you are looking for something that can better handle Doom 3 or HL2. The 6800 Ultra is really stomping the X800 XT in Doom 3 due to the coding in OpenGL. However, the X800 XT is destroying the 6800 in other areas, so it's all a matter of preference. On prices, I would always suggest Newegg, but I'm sure other people who have been swung in the craze of these video cards can list you a better price somewhere.

In terms of a motherboard to support this CPU, I've heard nothing but good things about Asus' K8V although I am not a firm supporter of the company.

Are you suggesting that i buy a 3500 becuase the pins are changing...or what did you mean when you said i should wait.

One other question..is it really worth it to buy a 6800Ultra over a 6800GT?

I have been waiting to build this thing for over a year and each time i am about to buy it i just say..no ill wait for something new to come out. Its been a year and i have a 1.6P4 and I need to upgrade for doom3....

This the right time now?

That is something I would like to know as well. It seems like building a pc is always playing the waiting game - there is no "right" time to buy/build
 
Alright, your build should *definitely* be less than $2K. Actually, way less.

You can save money going to 3200+ if you want. Overclocking to 3400+ speeds should be a breeze, really.

I would recommend this Corsair type for that AMD build. No more, no less. It's 1 GB too (512 x 2).

The X800XT/Ultra isn't even available (well not much). Also it sells for at least $550 dollars considering the *demand* is very high for it. You shouldn't waste so much money on that. Go for the X800 Pro or GT. However, I think I may recommend you the HIS X800 Pro IceQ II Limited Edition video card. They overclock very well on stock HSF and gives you excellent bang for the money.

Also here's a very curious X800 "Pro" product from Powercolor here. It's really actually an XT card-- for only $479.00!!! All you have to do is to flash the BIOS and it'll turn into a XT. I'd recommend going this way and saving money on the way too.
The motherboard-- I second that. The Asus K8V.

The right time to build is now. Just take advantage of the A64 prices. It's very cheap and it's still faster than most of the regular CPU's out there.
