I found an old P3 1ghz sitting around and was wondering if taking the fan off hte heatsink will be an issue. I want to use it as a bedroom computer and i don't want all the noise. I took it off and I am using it to post this right now and the heatsink so far isn't even warm to the touch.
 
if it's workin, if it ain't too hot, then i guess it's fine. P3's are nearly as hot as a p4
 
I dont think you'll be able to run that thing passively, unless you undervolt/underclock it significantly. Just strap a low-noise/decent-cfm 92mm fan to the heatsink

I highly doubt that. P3 chips had much lower power requirements than P4 chips did (not counting the Pentium mobile)

Anyways depending on the heatsink and air flow in the case, it's probably safe to take the fan off. I would check itthough just to make sure it doesn't overheat.

Let me say that again for the reading impaired.

You will need airflow over a passive cooler. However, you don't need a LOT of airflow, and it doesn't have to be DIRECT airflow. Many older pIII systems simply used an 80mm exhaust fan and a shroud. (See many Dells and IBM Netfinity family for examples of indirect cooled passive heatsinks.) They found the passive method was much less prone to failures.

My Dimention has that configuration and the psu fan is louder than the exaust fan.
 
The Via C3 Samuel can run with a heatsink only. I know it will do fine. The P3 will slow it's clock down to protect itself. It will eventually be so slow it will not be a good machine. Also the Samsung Spinpoint hard drive is a good bet for a super quiet drive, yet not very fast.
 
You do need some sort of airflow, I couldn't run a P3-500 Katmai without a fan.

You sure it's 35W?
erols list it as either 33W or 26W depending on the TcaseMax for the particular chip. (29W for the PC-PGA)

Anyway, I agree with what you're saying. These aren't the 15-20W low end PIIs where you could bolt a big Al HS on a forget about it, 30+W is a decent amount of heat to dissipate. I can ditch the fan on the CPU HS of my 35W AXP-M, but only becuause I've got a 120mm fan on the side of the case keeping it cool. The fan only runs at about 700-800 RPM and is dead silent, but it's not realistic to cool my CPU without it.
26W is something that is probably do-able with a good HS and just some exhaust fans, but in the 33/35W range, forcing some air over the HS is important.
