Passive CPU cooling possible?

I have an unRAID box that I recently put together, and I'm trying to get the noise levels down.

The system specs are:
Athlon II x4 605e @ 800MHz, 0.875V
785g chipset
4GB DDR3
4x HDDs (2x7200rpm, 2x5400rpm)

The stock CPU HSF is really loud; it's quite old and makes a high pitched whine.

I replaced the rear exhaust fan on the case with a 120mm Gentle Typhoon, and I just ordered a Cooler Master TX3 to replace the stock cooler.

Can I run the TX3 passively with the CPU underclocked/volted as I have it?
 
I would have gone with the Hyper 212+ and MAYBE you would have a shot at passive cooling.
 
use can passive most of todays cpu you just most of the time have to down volt or underclock the cpu some ut its deff possible.

also most cpus termal cutoff is really high like 80-90c alot more than the 30-40c we like to see on air and fan cooling

alos hs/fan combos like the nochta d14 with the fans at 50% speed is inaudible so even tho 2 140mm fans running you cant tell a deff way to go for quiet systems
 
No need to go passive for quiet. Get a good sink and replace the fan, if needed, with something that is quiet. Your gentle typhoon is a good example, inaudible when downvolted yet still moves enough air to cool even overclocked CPUs.
 
The TX3 is a pretty terrible cooler, but you should be able to just run a halfway decent 92mm fan at at a really low RPM.

Should have gone with a 120mm tower style cooler, you could have ducted it to the exhaust and definitely gotten away passive. Can you return it?

Yes.

It is possible to passive cool even with stock volts and frequency, so long as your case has great airflow. Though, as some other members have expressed, you are better off on the safe side to get a aftermarket cooler with low rpm fans. There are quite a few heatsinks that can accommodate 120mm fans. Obviously the Noctua D14, but you also have Megahalem, Venomous X and TRUE. One push 120mm 1000rpm fan will do (any fan under 1000rpm is generally quiet). I recommend the Scythe S-Flex 1200rpm fans.
 
Thermalright HR-02 was designed to run passively. Second to that, or for use with low-RPM fans and/or residual case airflow = Noctua NH-D14.

Some of the other large heatsinks would also work, but perhaps not as well as these two.

Fans below about 1000 RPM are already very quiet, however. You say you have a Scythe Gentle Typhoon: The AP-13 GT fan (1150 RPM) is excellent, and nearly silent if used in a closed case. Fan RPM/voltage control will work, and the GT-series undervolts reasonably well.
