The server is currently down due to my new disk controller, which is being a pain. I project that that'll take a week or so to resolve, and after that it should be up and stable for weeks. Before I got it (Supermicro AOC-SAT-MV8), it was up and stable (continuously) for a month. I'd guess once I get this figured out it'll be up for another month at least.

Okay, I guess it's time to give yall an update on what's going on with this. It's not up, it hasn't been for a while, and I'm not sure when it will be. Here's part of the email I got from the guy in charge of Resnet on the 26th:
Last night Resnet suffered another network outage. OIT staff were again
here working with Cisco until the early morning hours. We made some
progress in that we better understand what has been the cause of the
performance issues and subsequent crashes.

Simply put it appears that the amount of traffic which Resnet generates
is beyond the capabilities of the current hardware. Our current hardware
is reaching 100% utilization during the evening hours. When 100% load is
reached traffic within Resnet slows to crawl (slower than a dial-up modem).

Last night at approximately 1:00AM we blocked peer-to-peer ports for:

- eMule- BitTorrent- Gnutella- eDonkey- Overnet

Once the blocks were in place we dropped from a 100% utilization level
down to a 25% utilization level. It is not our intention to leave these
applications blocked permanently. However, we do anticipate leaving them
in place until we are confident that Cisco has provided us with a
reliable and permanent solution.

According to some other people I've talked to, BitTorrent is the main source of problems. Resnet just switched to using NAT (they managed to *use up* a /16 worth of addresses, mostly through incredible amounts of subnetting (for example, everything is on a /30 - there's half of it gone right there), and it generates about 150k packets/sec. That's way more than the last router could handle, so they are in the process of getting a new router which can handle the load and installing it.

The upshot of all this: they also blocked (without mentioning it) the port 24842 incoming access. So, until further notice, I can't host this.

If someone has real hosting and would like to see this happen, I can help you set it up. You'll need Perl and a PostgreSQL database; right now there are 8 tables or something but I could trim it to one if necessary (and it'd probably be a good idea anyways). Please PM if you'd be interested in helping out.

I've got a T-1, /27 IP's (using 1..) and some crappers here we could load this on.

If people will actually use it, and link it in the stickies, and not screw it up, then yes it will be useful. If it sits there and nothing ever happens with it, not really. That's not really up to me, though - if it gets used enough initially, people will see it as a viable way to share parts, and it can grow.

If ben can set up a debian-sarge box (quite a task, but he's got my IM) then I can add everything else I need via ssh, get it all set up and firewalled, and then go from there.

It would definitely be added in the stickies, it would just maintain the disclaimer that by participating in it, you do so at your own risk.

As I posted in the poll thread, we also had some interested volunteers to post the information and generally admin the listings so that it stayed up to date much better than the current threads.

I was thinking of using one of my "production" boxen I have a lot of parts for always (the crapper ones ben...)

Intel SE-440 BX-2 Motherboard
P2-P3 350 mzh - 600 mzh (in some revisions can fit a 800 mzh P3 in)
Ram- how much you need? Upto 384 no problem, MB can take 768
3com 905x NIC
HD- (4-6 GB)

Let me know if this won't work. I've always got these parts on hand so if something crooked I could swap out the parts.

Almost anything would work. I'm currently running it on a p3 933 with 256, and getting pretty good (sub-.1 second) response times. Nothing fancy and decent performance. And I'd guess that as long as it's faster than half a second to do a given operation it'll be "fast enough". So in other words, go for the uber crapper. :D

umm...... let's just say I owe you pizza...

On second thought, maybe using work crappers not the best idea...

I have a AMD 750 Slot 1 thingy, MB/CPU can add the rest of the parts

Or use that dullie I have. 550 x2 P3. I kept the stupid thing, not really any use for it. I was gonna use it to test out certian software packages, that never really panned out. 512 ECC SDRAM PC100 in it (4x DIMMS, I broke one of the retention clip sets, can fix). 20 GB hard drive, 3Com Nic and nice sound card and video (best of the crappers, don't ask...)
