painting faceplates

in my rig i have this http://shop3.outpost.com/product/3648195 dvd rom drive. anyways i have the beige model in a black antec sonata case with all my other optical drives being black. anyways i would like to paint the faceplate black and was wondering how would i go about in doing so. if anyone has any helpful links on how to's please share, thanks.
 
I believe vinyl dyeing is pretty effective, but I haven't had the occasion to try it myself. In any case, to get it to look good, you'll need to take the faceplate off of your drive, and paint it separately.
 
in my experiences vinyle dye works good or you coudl try that Krylon Fusion not as happy witht he results of that though. your best bet would be to go with the vinyle dye. all you do is take the faceplat off and spray it all make sure you get all the corners
 
well all i used was some automotive spray paint (had it lying around) and some clear...and the results came out really good....
 
That comp looks like shit, I'd suggest you avoid following the instructions there..

Additionaly, I'd advise you to work on primer/paint/clear, to paint your face plate, as the result would be much better, and resist better with time ( I don't know how much vinyl holds on surfaces - especially plastics & non sanded surfaces )

Another way if go for Polyuréthane paints, as they tend to hold better than acrylic ( I used it to paint my curren't mod's chassis, 1 layer and holds quite nicely :) )

With plastics, a vinyl dye will give you a much more durable finish. Paints just lay on top of the plastic, where a dye actually bonds with the plastic on a molecular level.
 
vinyle dye is realy good for when you want to see small detail like a symbol of a power or open button, i like primer-paint-clear myself because you can get a much glossier nicer finish.
 
I used flat black high temperature resistant Grill paint from Menards. It came out tuff as hell, like a gun barrel.
