P5Q Pro FSB limit?

Been trying to OC my Q9650. Got it currently at 4.2ghz and 1.25v with 467x9. Cant even get it to do 500x8 at the same voltage, no matter what i do to the ram and NB.

I cant get my FSB stable over ~470 no matter what. My ram should be plenty good enough for it though its currently doing 467 with 5-5-5-15 and 1.9v and the rated spec is 400 with 4-4-3-5 at 2.0-2.1v...and ive got a HR05 on the north bridge. Cant get it stable at 500 even with 1.7v on the NB and 2.2v on the ram. Any suggestions? Any suggested settings for me to try?
 
Remove the OC and up the RAM speed to where it's not stable and see if it's the RAM causing the problem. If not then change your multi to 6 and set the FSB to 500 and see if your hitting a FSB wall. My P5Q-Pro is stable at 1.3v NB with a 500 FSB.
 
Kept the OC at 4.2ghz 1.25v, upped the ram to 561, 2.1v, 5-5-5-15...running IBT no problem.
 
Have you tried upping your FSB Termination and CPU PLL voltages? Those can sometimes help get past an FSB wall.

I mean did you set the multi to the lowest setting in the BIOS and set the FSB high (500 or whatever you are shooting for), it's so you can check to see if it's a FSB wall and not the OC it self. Some chips/mobo's just hit a FSB wall and will not go anymore.
 
Ah. Yeah...i didnt lower it to 3.0ghz though...left the voltage at 1.25v and lowered the multi to 8x500 to 4.0ghz.
 
Consider yourself lucky, my P5QL-E won't go over 411mhz FSB. Even if I flash it with a P5Q bios it has the same limitations.

Either Asus have deliberately locked the board in some way, or the P45/43 Chips Asus use are just low grade.


It's annoying because I really wanted to just get an old P35 but no one sells them anymore in the UK, and they seem to be vastly superior to the P43s.
 
Asus p45's are hardly low grade, they are some of the best boards for clocking quads on.
 
Have you tried going for 480FSB, instead of going straight for 500? My P5Q Pro takes 1.42 Vnb, 1.38 Vfsb, and 1.56 Vpll for 480FSB. You might want to change your Vpll to a fixed number instead of Auto. Also, you might try changing the DRAM Static Read to Disabled, DRAM Read Training to Disabled, and CPU Margin Enhancement to Performance or Compatible.

One more thing you might want to do is feel your northbridge heatsink while at 100% load. Mine was getting quite hot, so I put a fan blowing on it to help cool it off.
 
I will check all of them. I have a HR05 on it so im not too worried about heat. With the NB at 1.36 it gets warm under load, when i start putting voltage to it to tinker around i always put a fan on it and it stays very cool, even with 1.8v+

Thanks for the heads up. Ill see if i can back it down some. Unfortunately, crap like this is how FUD starts. They beat up the CPU trying to OC it, and blame one specific thing when it fails, and dont post there reasoning other than "its the only thing we changed, so it must be it". It was only one CPU...statistically, unless other people are reporting the same stuff (and i would like to know if others have confirmed this)...this is likely an isolated event with no relation to the VTT.
