Hi everyone!

I have been trying to troubleshoot this 1 for a while now and it has really got me stressed!

Symptom:
I sometimes get a long pause (30sec - over a minute) between the POST screen and the Windows Loading screen. The screen is black but is still on. There doesnt seem to be any activity from the HD at this time as far as i have noticed. This is real intermittent and i cant tell when its going to happen or make it happen. Can happen after a reboot or on a cold boot. it has happened with XP and VISTA Home Premium (both 32-bit).

Tested so far:
I have had the pc in a pc shop where they did a stress test, memtest, vid card text, HD test... they did this over night and did not receive any errors. so that is about 98% sure that its not a hardware fault. while i had it at their shop it did not display the problem!

to be safe i changed my SATA cables and i removed the front panel connectors (USB/1394/audio) connectors form the board.

i have also tried formatting and installing drivers from the asus website and also doing a format and installing drivers from the relevant manufacturers websites.

pc specs:
Asus P5K-VM
Core2Duo 2.66gig
160Gig HD (SATA - western digital)
OCZ DDR2 2x1gig 800mhz (timings - 4-4-4-15 2.1V reommended manu)
Gainward 512MB 8600GT
DVD burner (SATA)

any ideas?

I have exactly the same issue, about the only thing in common is the Asus P5K-VM, I'm not really too concerned as it's infrequent. Not sure if it's down to Vista just sorting itself out after installing new software at the last session, this being the first restart.

I believe Vista updates and installs software without your knowledge... thought it was related to this, but I may be wrong.

I'm using Vista 64

Do you have any external hard drives via usb turned on when you boot up? If so turn them off.
 
no external drives... even unplugged front panel connections (USB etc..)

Hully - im starting to think this is related to the motherboard or BIOS... and we both have that in common... i have had the same thing happen with both XP and Vista both 32-bit... hence i dont think it is related to the OS... do you have a vid card installed or are you using the onboard?
 
Even when I used the onboard, I had no problems booting up after post screen.

Are we definitely saying it’s not Vista updating then?

I could post my complete bios setting if you wish...just a pain collecting the info and typing it in.

i am running the latest BIOS and having the exact same issue...

so far 2 theories is:
- a bug in the BIOS when there is no IDE device connected and that it sometimes finds itself searching...
- someone else said they only had the problem when they had their NVIDIA card attached but were fine using onboard...

reswob did you not experience this with your NVIDIA card attached? did you format and install with the card instead of onboard?
 
I have had problems with this motherboard before, that were solved by doing a reset.

You know, the kind where you press a button and take the battery out and leave it for 5 minutes, or something. I can't remember the exact procedure, check the manual. But I recommend trying it, the worst that can happen is that your settings will be reset to default.
 
i just made a change to the registry (disabling IPv6) and then on restart it did it again... seems to happen after a system change/edit...

changing IDE timeout to 0sec doesnt seem to have done anything...

i have been contemplating CMOS clear but avoiding it because i have a TT Lanbox and it is so tight to get into and a bugger to get everything back in!! lol!

This on the very first bootup after assembly on each rig. This happened with both mobos and I just assumed it was normal thing for the P5K-VM. Since then though both work fine and boot up as they should. Not sure what to tell you as far as solutions.

Just thought I'd mention it.
 
I've never gotten a long pause. I've used onboard video, I've used my 8800GTS and 8800GT, I've had no IDE drive with 2 sata drive, and with an IDE drive too. The only time I get weird black screens is when my OC is unstable and I have to hold the power button down.

Try a CMOS reset see what happens.
 
Happens to me when I use the USB hub integrated into my Dell 2405FPW, which I need to extend the number of USB ports on my Shuttle.

If I unplug the monitor or if I plug an external USB HDD into it, then there is no pause.

someone else suggested my PSU might be the cause???

I didn't find the FSP 500W Blue Storm specs to be overly impressive. 15A MAX on the +12v1 and +12v2 rails. If the power supply is wired to ATX specs the +12v2 should be dedicated to the processor which would only leave the +12v1 @ 15A max to supply all the other +12v needs.

Hi the_slayer

Will try and get round to switching out my keyboard which has a USB hub, for one that does not will let you know if it makes a difference.

The lag at start occurs about 1 in 15 starts and lasts approx 20 sec, always seems longer when your waiting.

Update

Ok, switch to another keyboard with no USB ports built in, so far no pause at all. Looks like it's the USB ports in my Enermax keyboard causing the problem, just for interest the USB ports in said keyboard are USB 1 not 2.
