Hi folks!
When I first put this rig together a couple of months ago I had great success overclocking my 3.2C. With the stock Intel HSF+TIM I could POST at 3.91GHz and was stable at 3.84GHz (1.60v). Since then I've been running stock speeds and didn't worry too much about overclocking. Recent additions to my rig are a 6800GT (from a 9700 Pro), a BIOS update to 1017 (final) and a waterchill cooling kit (which is doing an amazing job cooling my CPU). Yesterday I decided to see what extra overclocking headroom my Waterchill kit has given me - I was shocked.
I shooted straight for 4GHz first - it POSTed but Windows was a no-show. Oh well, let's take it down a notch or two. Pretty quickly I realised the rig was overclocking worse than before! Eventually I settled on 3.75GHz and began some stress testing - I ran Prime95 alongside the RTHDRIBL 3D demo and.....POW!! I killed my 380W Antec power supply (the one bundled with the Antec Sonata) stone dead. I replaced that with my old Enermax 650W PSU and did some more testing today. But it's the same story - overclocking is much worse than before. I've tried messing around with vcore, AGP VDDQ etc. I've run the DDR at their most relaxed settings to make sure that's not the cause. I've also run out of ideas.
Can the 6800GT really be causing the problems with overclocking? I don't have my old 9700 Pro to test in the board to see if it is the 6800GT. Or is it the new 1017 BIOS? My CPU is far cooler than before but the overclocking is much worse.......Whiskey Tango Foxtrot???
Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Any help would be much appreciated.
