Yup, my girlfriend has a 1.6a ... it used to be overclocked. Not anymore. Hasnt been for a long while.

Anyhow, what i'm wondering is two folds.
What should the idle temps be around? its got a HSF for a 2.8c at the moment.

What voltage should I be showing from Motherboard Monitor 5? it is showing an average of 1.46 over the last hour with no crashes (1.42v low, 1.46v high)
Im asking because the computer has been having stability probelms over the last few days. It's been completely wiped, re-partitioned, the whole bit. Still has the problems.

The voltage for the Vcore in the BIOS is set to auto.
Should i try setting it to 1.55v?
When i was re-applying the HSF with some AS5 tonight, i noticed that it sais right on the heat spreader "1.5v" i take it this is 1.5volts?
Is the .04v variance (on average) enough to cause instability?
(the problem is that the computer will just hard boot, instantly, as if the reset switch was thrown).

What is the threshold for stability in regards to Vcore ?

It's hard to say if that difference in vcore is causing the problem, or even if the vcore reading is accurate. Its probably unlikely at stocks speeds and more likely at OC speeds. Other causes of instability could be faulty ram, power supply or motherboard. You could unplug non-essential peripherals and try taking a stick of ram out and then testing them one at a time or borrowing some. You could also try the proc in a different computer if possible though I doubt it’s the proc. good luck.

you might want to try increasing the vcore and see if your problems go away, if its running at 1.42v that could be a cause for concern. i believe all stock p4 northwoods run at 1.525v, and at 1.42, that is a rather large discrepancy.
 
I've been running Prime95 for two hours now. It hasnt crashed.
what would cause the system to crash in normal use, when Prime95 does not?
(running the torture test, most heat generated version)

EDIT: bumped the voltage up to 1.525. booted windows, ran MBM5. it's showing a high VOltage of 1.49, and a low of 1.44 ....

Am i correct in saying that it's the Motherboard that regulates how much voltage actually gets to the CPU ? I mean, i can tell this MSI 645E Max-C board to give it 5.85v, but if the motherboard cannot do it, the chip wont get that much voltage.

Or is it limited by the PSU's output?

run memtest86 - if you are having instability problems it could very likely be cuased by the memory.

No errors found running memtest86.
How long should i run that for, for an accurate test of the RAM?
 
You could try Memtest for windows...

Also - The PSU could be failing, or VRM 's on the mobo as well. Are you able to make it crash on command?
