P4 vs. AMD question

I am looking to upgrade from my current AMD Athlon 1.2 to something more. My computer is used mainly for gaming (okay, solely for gaming) and the new games coming out in the near future are going to tax my machine.

I like AMD's but for the life of me cannot figure out how, say, the 2800 XP compares to the P4 2.8. A friend of mine recently got the P4, and I would like to keep up with the Jones, preferably by going the AMD route if it is comparable.

I'm looking around the $250-300 range for the mobo-cpu combo, as I have figured out, or already have, everything else I need.

Any thoughts on the comparison/what to get would be great. Thanks.

if you were gonna get a 2800, get the 2500 and an abit nf7s v2. you can oc them past the 3200 very easy. thatd be about $190-200 at newegg.

also welcome to the [H] :)
