hey, i just got my self a new asus mobo to replace my shity pchips. ok
now when i was replacing my p4 1.6, i saw a little hole there. i was wondering what it was for. anyone here know? i didnt put thermal paste there because i taught it was something not to be blocked. any one got ideas?

Dosn't it mark where the so called 'Pin 1' location is? It should be notched out right under the dot. Makes it so the proc can only go in one way.

That hole in the heatspreader is for processor to breath easier. Not sure if that's the right answer though. Nothing to worry about though.

its for the heatspreader to vent the pressure. If the heat rises very suddenly and rapidly (as it would during poweron)

The heatspreader may pop off the cpu due to the increase in air pressure and thus damaging the cpu or reducing the thermal effictiveness of the heatspreader.

It doesnt matter if you get heat paste in the hole. Just make sure that if it does get in the hole, you better hope its not a silver based or electrical conductive heatpaste :p

Your hard drive has that hole too. It kind of serves the same purpose.

Yeps, I have the same CPU, a great overlocker. But yeah you should not worry about that little hole. You can even apply thermal paste on top of it and it should still be fine.
