What is the best method for updating ATI drivers? Overwriting without uninstalling the old, or uninstall / reboot / install new drivers?

Thanks

go to control panel and use ati intall manager to uninstall all ati related software, reboot and reinstall.

I haven't had a problem on Vista or Win7 with just installing overtop and letting the installer take care of things.

Although I understand alot of people just pile the new driver on top of the previous version, I still do it the old school way.

I use the ATI installer and remove the current driver,CCC,etc.
then run drivercleaner.net.
then load the new drivers.

I have been scolded in any number of threads across the vast expanse of the internet that I am a total retard for doing things this way...........but hey..........sticks and stones.:D

because WDDM 1.1 makes that obsolete, I could throw words/numbers/statistics at you, but it doesn't really matter now does it?

You'll discover in 7 not only should you be able to just overwrite the driver, you should be able to update it without rebooting. Graphics drivers are a lot better these days than they used to be.

I'd only uninstall and do a DC if you upgrade and all of a sudden have problems. With my 280 I always did update over top installs and they worked great, now with my 5870 I tried it with the 9.12s and same deal.

In fact you should be able to have an nVidia card, remove it, install an ATi card and install the ATi drivers without ever uninstalling anything. The HAL is much better in 7 than in XP.

Do an express remove all software from the add/remove programs, reboot, install new drivers, reboot. Simple.
