overheated processor now computer doesn't work. what broke?

Apparently CPU fan unplugged itself in the middle of a gaming session and computer just froze. I turned it on and all was fine, without realizing what happend I started playing again but it froze another time. I opened the case and saw the issue, plugged the fan back in but now when I turn it on, computer turns on but doesn't display anything on the screen.

Thinking it was the CPU, I got a new CPU and new motherboard. But the issue is still there - when I turn computer on, nothing shows up and the LCD goes into power saving mode. All fans are spinning, lights on, cd-rom works. I tried unplugging each component to see if it makes a difference but, unfortunately no.

So what should I do next? What are the chances that it's the video card or PSU that broke? Motherboard doesn't have video out.

Original components:
AMD p2 955
MSI 770-C45
---replaced with:
Intel SB 2500k
MSI P67A-G43

Rest of the system:
Radeon HD 5850 Video Card
2gbx4 bargain crucial ram
Corsair TX950W 950W TX Series PSU
Intel 25x ssd hdd and a 2 spinning hdds
 
has to be the vid card if you hook Speakers to it can you hear it boot to windows? and have you tried the card in another pc ?
 
Definitely the video card. Try a different card or try that 5850 in another system.
 
yep it's the video card. Most expensive part of my computer and it doesn't have warranty. What right does it have to break like that on me :( Anyone know how to fix it?
 
Why the hell would the video card go out from a simple cpu overheat? That really makes no sense. CPU's live through overheating but take out the video card? The motherboard, memory, lots of other things should have gone out first.

I doubt it was the cpu causing the problem in the first place. Probably the video card locking up during gaming and crashing. I think the cpu fan not being plugged in was just coincidence. The only time I have had a cpu shutdown from overheating was when the heatsink wasn't even installed and I turned on the pc, with the heatsink installed but no fan it just throttled the speed which I bet your cpu was doing also.

Yeah, but maybe it was unrelated, maybe CPU fan was off for months and I just noticed the issue when video card decided to die. CPU has a huge aftermarket heatsink and 2 case fans blowing on it. That's what I am thinking now. But why would video card die ><

Sounds like your system didn't get much attention. I open my case at least once a week.....sometimes just to look it over for signs of problems.
