Overclocking

Hi all

I want to try overclocking. I know that I do not need to do so but I will anyway.

I have an XP 3200+
1024 mb of memory (pc 3200 ddr)
120 gb hdd
FX 5200
Asus A7N8X Deluxe v. 2.0 mboard
XP Pro

I have been able only to produce 2.31 (2.2 standard) speed and it is not altogether stable. (210 x 11.0)
If anyone out there can give me the exact settings in the BIOS that I need to alter then I would be most grateful.

Thanks.

Nigel

its a little different for every processor and setup, and conditions vary. so you wont get anywhere asking for exact settings. the two things you need to worry about first are crap memory and high load temperatures.

what brand and "model" is your memory, and what are its ratings (should be three or four numbers like 2-3-2-6 or 2-3-3-7 or something)?

do you have custom cooling or just the standard AMD fan and heatsink, and do you know how to find the temperature your processor is running at?

im still new at this too so i cant help much, but try to find other people with your board and processor whove had some success. get help from them. also plenty of people here that seem to know everything about anything, so who knows.

Looks like I have paid for a 3200+ and will not even be able to have it run at speeds like 2.4 when 2600+ are regularly reaching that level.

My memory is 1024 of Corsair Value (2x512 dual ddr (3200))
120 Gb of Seagate Barracuda 7200 rpm HDD
Ge Force FX5200 128mb Graphics card
Asus A7N8X Deluxe v. 2.0 mboard Rev. 1007
XP Pro

There must be someone out there who can give me some decent info. so that it will run above 2.3. Please.

iv been able to overclock my 2000+ to 1.8 ghz with only stock cooling, but then again i have 6 case fans, 2 psu fans and all my power cables are sleeved.

The weak link in your system is probably your ram. I don't know if your CPU is unlocked, but if it is, you can increase the multipier and keep you FSB low enough for your ram. You can also relax the timings on your ram in order to get a higher FSB. Keep in mind, if your temperatures are high, it can limit your overclock severly. Hope that helps.

I have also found through my brother that having a good heatsink works really well. Hes got a 92mm goin and hes got a 2500 and he oc it to 2.2 gs. SO GET A GOOD HEAT SINK .. plus memory helps a great deal. But also remember that all processors are not the same, you can get a better preformance out of another one than you would with another....make sence?
Youll also see that people go with watercooling also... a very exspensive but also great solution for major oc. But if u want it to run alittle better dont spend 200$ for wc just buy a nice heatsink. hope that helps a little bit.

I prob woulda gotten a 2500+, but that's just me..

Corsair value ram is ACTUALLY not that bad.. I read an article on it, and it beat out or kept up with many other "better" sticks..

You need to up your Vcore and Vdimm (voltage to memmory) to get the 2.3 more stable.. You should be able to push that thing higher.. What are your temps? What type of cooling do you have..?

As I said, you should be able to go that high and higher.. Your ram WILL be the first bottle-neck though..

Instead of getting a 3200+.. I woulda OCed a 2500+ and gotten a better gfx card.. But anyway.. Yeah, up those voltages, make sure the temps. are ok, and then test..

MAg has you going in the right direction...

Make sure you get a copy of motherboard moniter and whatch your temps.

In general you need to lower your multiplier and slowly increase your fsb - if you can boot and run some benchmarks then your doing ok...

Once you have hit the top FSB bump up the vdd (if you can) - vcore - vdimm... Make sure you know the specs so as not to push it too far.

After you find the highest stable point with you FSB back it off 5 to 10 points and raise your multiplier and see how high you can get - increase your voltages as needed.

In my experience I have found that a balance between FSB and multiplier worked well for my system. Remember each system is different so your experience will be unique.

With all this done play some more with the settings (FSB\multiplier) and see which gives you the best scores.

Next do some tweaking with your memory settings to see if you can squeez out some more... and when the dust settles so some testing with the following applications.

3D mark 2001 (330)
AquaMark3
Prime95 (needs to run several hours some say 12 some say more)
Sandra
ADIA32
MEMTEST86

If you find errors adjust down a little on the componet that is stressed the most to see if you can get it stable.

Good Luck - Post your results.
