so i was thinking about putting together a system based on xeon e5 1620 when it comes out and was wondering if xeon chips allow at all for any type of overclocking. If so, what types are allowed. I was thinking of pairing it with the asus x79 ws. any chance there is multiplier wiggle room or anything else? thanks

i'd say xeons have a multiplier lock. you might be able to adjust the BCLK like 5% to get an extra 100mhz

saw a thread at anandtech about a guy who put a xeon on a 1155 p67/z68 mobo. he could adjust the multiplier numbers in BIOS, but doesn't seem to affect the actual multipier on the chip. see if i can find it again

EDIT: it wasnt a 1155 mobo, but a E5 SB-E 2011. I guess no luck

see my sig?

you can overclock xeons, just pay attention to which one you get.

great, thanks

as far as paying attention to which one i get, does intel usually specify the overclocking abilities of xeons or is it just a matter of seeing what people can do with them once they're released?

lol @ intel marketing enthusiast xeons

"for the admin who demands raw speed above efficiency and stability!"

lol, this proc was given to me for free, so i sold my amd 1055t combo and bought a decent mobo for it.

yea, it eats more power. idc. it was free.

you'll have to pay attention to the reviews and comments on the cpus, but afaik xeons dont come clock locked, it's just most boards don't support oc'ing.. at least, when you start putting them into dual socket boards.

The SB Xeons come clock locked, thanks to Intel's new market segmentation techniques.
At least on the ES Xeons people have played with, the 1.25x FSB strap doesn't do squat.
The Nehalem Xeons are FSB-unlocked, multiplier locked, but the only board that could OC them is the SR-2.

The Nehalem Xeons are exactly like the 900 series, regarding overclocking. I have a W3540 which is identical to a i7 940
