overclocking with 4 RAM sticks

Long story very short, it's more stressful on a motherboard to have to direct data to four locations than it is to direct data to two locations. Often the motherboard will have more trouble overclocking, or will automatically underclock the memory to handle the stress.

Plus it limits your upgradeability. Most motherboards have only four ram slots, so if you use up all four, you'll have to ditch one or more to upgrade.

why do people tell me to go with 2 ram cards instead of 4?
Overclocking with 4 sticks of ram is similar to having sex with a 17 year old. It's not worth the time or effort:)
4 sticks is pretty demanding of the memory controller and you will have better luck and upgrade opportunities if you stick with 2.

You're absolutuly right. I agree 100%. 17 is too old.

It's not when you are =>18. Sorry, forgot we were is mixed company

lol, as a 16 year old, it is worth the time and effort lol. so what memory would you suggest to get a 6300 up to 3ghz? on the ds3. please dont say "well it just matters what kinda cooling you have" cause that wont help

If you are overclocking a conroe right now with 2x1G RAM, and when Vista comes out and you need to upgrade to 4G, what should you do? Add another 2x1G or throw out the RAM and get 2 new sticks of 2x2G RAM? I plan to get upgrade the RAM to 4G when I install Vista. If I used 4x1G of RAM, will the overclock suffer a lot?

DDR333 not 400 T2 not T1 and lower OCs unless you have a stud of a mem controller....

Yea... what about those of us who are running Vista, or who need 4gb for certain applications?

most revE chips can do >200mhz at 2T with 4 sticks in easily. it's really up to the mobo to be capable of supplying the power :(

btw, the perks of the extra bank interleaving with 4 sticks vs 2 slightly negate the hit from 2T cmd :p

Just save yourself a WHOLE load of trouble and don't even consider it. I spent ages wrestling with 4 x 512mb modules with my 939 nf3 rig and it just really didn't get me anywhere. Random crashes, increasing voltage reduces overclocking despite exceptional ram cooling, games crash where prime95 runs for hours. The other month I just gave up and I'm midway through converting to 2 x 1 gig sticks. Already with just the 1 in there I can get a higher cpu overclock, higher fsb, tighter timings, and even (shock horror) 1T timing.

If you have 2 x 512mb sticks and are considering getting another 2 (just as I did) then don't. Just bite the bullet get a 2 x 1 gig sticks.

Why on Earth would you need 4 gigs of RAM to run Vista?

...you buy a computer just to run operating systems? You don't need 4 gigs to run Vista itself, but what about BF2 on a Vista system? What about new games similar to BF2 that perform better with 2gb+ memory, when the OS is already using quite a hefty ammount?

As long as your memory controller is powerful enough, you will not see noticable performance drop going to 4gb.

thanks you guys. what would the best (price/performance) RAM be for getting an e6300 on a ds3 to 3ghz
