If you overclock your cpu, but keep the stock voltage, will more power be used?

Im just taking a break from gaming and Im realizing that these overclocks arent helping me speed up my word documents :). So, im trying underclocking it...for now :)

power useage is roughly linear with the mhz change, and square with the voltage change...

drop the speed 25% and it should draw 25% less power

In a nutshell, yes. You know how all proc's of a series have the same TDP but only the highest clocked one's ever reach it under normal operation? Same idea applies with a chip that is OC'ed at stock voltage. Of course, stock voltage OC is still friendlier on the power than jacking up voltage by .5V :)

So your priority should be undervolting, not underclocking. The underclocking will just help you achieve the goal of undervolting. You will see your proc can do stock speed with a way lower than normal voltage, start there first then see if you want to go lower by underclocking too.

sorta not really. while faster chips are warmer on average, no two chips are the same, so a 2ghz chip at 1.4v could actually be hotter than a 2.4ghz chip at 1.4v.. :D

Sorry, I mean underVOLTING rather than underclocking. Me=nub again

does what youre saying still apply?
