I just purchased my parts from mc yesterday, still deciding on ram and other stuff. However, I know I plan to oc this a bit, maybe to 4.2. Think I would be ok with the stock heatsink and fan, but with MX-2 thermal material? Cuz I know majority of the good heatsink like Hyper 212+ require a mount plate under the motherboard, which is better to do it before the system is built.

If you can get that high without raising the voltage, you might be okay, but it's kind of a crap-shoot. If you plan on overclocking, I'd get an aftermarket cooler.

I am planning to:
buy either 4 gig ddr3 with Hyper 212+

$42.00 for the ram

28.69 for hyper 212

or

buy 8 gig ddr3 and use stock and oc to maybe 4.2, I got some MX-2 left over so it should be better than intel stuff.

$75.00

Which plan seems better?

I'd go with the 8GB and use the Intel heatsink. See how far you can get with that, then pickup a heat sink later if you are not happy with the results. I would use the stock Intel TIM as well. The MX-2 won't make a large difference.

I disagree. You'll likely get more performance out of an overclocked 4 GB machine then you will a lower clocked 8 GB machine. What are you planning on using it for? Do you need processor power or more memory? Bottom line, $30 for a good cooler is a great investment if you plan on being an overclocker.

If you are getting the Hyper 212+ buy an extra fan for it and do push/pull.

I actually picked up a Corsair A70 cooler from best buy for 30, is it better than hyper 212?

Well, I mainly game on this system, no photoshop or hard core video coding.

Roughly comparable, from what I've seen. Should be plenty of cooling for SB in any case.

The A70 is pretty good, HardOCP's internal tests show it being competitive with CPU coolers that cost twice as much.

Also the stock thermal paste with the A70 is fairly expensive Shin-etsu, among the best thermal pastes you can buy.

i got hyper212 and 2nd fan to go with it
and my 2500k idles around 28~33c depending on core ( i suck @ seating i know ) while on default clock
on prime95 tourture test it goes up to 55~59c
after that i oced and got it to 5ghz prime95 test puts it up to around 80c @ 5ghz

default clock for default clock, those are the same temps I'm getting on the stock cooler. Although I reach 80c @4.3ghz :/

The stock heatsink is complete trash. I was running 86C after loading Windows 7. It just doesn't fit to the processor very well. Hyper 212 I am running 37C. Stock speeds at the moment.

Obviously somethings is not right on your setup. On stock cooler I hover in the 30c mark (-2/+5) With the Hyper 212 you should be in the mid to lower 20s from what other people have reported. Just sayin.

Idle temps depend heavily on the ambient temps though.
