Hey im looking for some help from you guys about my 1st ever overclocking attemp, im going to be using RivaTuner software. I was wanting to know what i could realistically upgrade to without causing me any heat problems :) this is my pc spec:

Antec NINE HUNDRED Gamers ATX Case
Microsoft Vista Premium 32-Bit
Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 2.40GHz Dual Core CPU
Intel 975X (Socket LGA775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro
Arctic Silver 5 Heatsink compound
BFG 1000W Power Supply
Cellshock 2GB Ultra PC2-6400 CAS4 (2x1GB) Dual Channel Kit (Overclocked at 900MHz+)
NVIDIA BFG 8800 GTXoc 768MB
500GB Western Digital 16MB Cache SATA-2 Hard Drive

If any of you guys have roughly the same standard settings and have overclocked safely would it be possible to share your set up info with me? thanks for any info it will be much appreciated! cheers....

First; if you are going to overclock your system then you shall NOT use Rivatuner or any other "overclocking tool", instead you shall go into your BIOS and overclock from there. Here is a nice little guide that helped me on the way some months back, it should help you alot too, even if it's not made specifically for your MB.

You should be overclocked to 3.0ghz easily with your current setup, but in the meantime monitor your temperature as you overclocking with "coretemp".

Thanks for the help guys much appreciated ;) i always thought it was bad to mess with bios and it was safer with overclocking tools but looks like i was mis-informed. i will do some reading up on using the bios with that guide you recommended :) anything else i should consider when oc'ing? cheers.....

if you don't know already, unlock your ram...keep it running at stock until you are ready to take RAM for an overclocking spin

Fun Fact: intel reccomends you keep your CPU under 65 celcius

Another Fun Fact: onboard core 2 temps are rather inaccurate so take them with a grain of salt, it has to do with the location of the sensors (theres 2 one on the cores another offset next to the IHS)

GL&HF

Thanks for the extra info ;) ive just done some overclocking and got the cpu to 3ghz so happy bout that and temps are below the intel recommendations, been playing FEAR for bout 2hours on max settings and its stable. 3dmark06 now shows a score of 10784 :) on vista 32. 1 more question what are you guys using to increase the RAM settings, fancy doin some tweeking there to since im on a roll..... thanks

RAM should only be increased along side the front side bus. It is done via BIOS.

Sync your FSB and RAM (run RAM x2 the frequency of your FSB)

Async ratios are difficult for the memory controller to maintain as you reach higher FSB speeds..

Ill assume you have unlocked dividers...(is that a 600series feature only or what?) if you do its simple as raising the ram FSB if you dont....put your fsb at stock with a 1:1 divider and gradually raise that testing for ram... once you've hit what you think is max for ram fiddle around with settings until you find that sweet spot between CPU speed and Memory speed
