Overclocking new pc

I just put together a new pc and wanted to put it working to its potential. I wanted to overclock it but was unsure of whats a safe number to overclock to. I want to play Doom 3 but right now even at low settings, it is still quite choppy. Hope someone can help.

Abit VT7 mobo
ATI RADEON Sapphire 9500
1 gb DDR
100 gb Western Digital
160 Gb Maxtor
Onboard Sound(for now)
 
you have the 9500pro or nonpro? your video card is holding you back no doubt.

as for overclocking the processor, what heatsink are you using? you should defaintely consider upgrading it whether or not your gonna overclocked. as for overclocking your processor, you could probably reach ~4ghz easy as long as it doesnt get too hot.
 
For heatsink Im using the stock Abit. For cpu cooler, Im using a Zalman. With these cooling, whats a safe overclock? Thanks
 
You're not going to notice any difference unless you get a better videocard.
 
Those OEM coolers should give you a nice CPU overclock. Just don't go too crazy with voltages, watch your temps, and it will be fine. However as said above, overclocking the CPU will make very little of a difference in FPS. Get ATI Tool and overclock that videocard (although performance will still be marginal)
