overclocking a PPU.... pointless?

well I plan to run my 8800gts512mb as a dedicated PPU when my GTX280 gets heres, what i am wondering is if there is any benifit to running it still overclocked or should I just put it back at stock?

Your overclock will allow the card to perform the PhysX calculations faster, however in my opinion it really is not needed as your card should handle all of the games that currently use PhysX without a sweat.
 
Processing is processing. Bdb is right. If you are PhysX bottlenecked in some game, overclocking that processor (GPU) would speed up your overall framerates. But it would *only* do this in physx bottlenecked games/scenes. If there isn't enough physx work to tax the card, overclocking it won't buy you anything.

It's the same as if your game is GPU-bound or CPU-bound.

Okay... how the hell do you manage to be confused by a thread on PPUs which is posted in a sub-forum of the GPU section of this forum? This also in the knowledge that discrete PPUs are so last year and GPUs are the same as PPUs nowadays, unless you have managed to live underneath a rock for the past few years, yet even then it's puzzling...

CPU = Central Processing Unit, capable of calculating all sorts of data, physcis and graphics, master of none, jack of all trades.

It's pure logic, as we can ask these simple questions:

Uhm... GPUs and PPUs == massively parallel vector processor. So yes, GPU == PPU.

he has a very valid point, anyone with an old PPU knows that it runs pretty slow compared to todays GPUs. Thus if there was a way to overclock, anyone with an old PPU that doesnt have a decent GPu to replace it would be rather excited.
 
If you're using an Nvidia card and you want to accelerate your PPU you mostly want to bump the Shader Clock speeds as the memory and core wont affect your performance as much as shader clocks.
 

What? You could easily implement an API like OpenGL for a PPU and execute it all on there. You'd just need to copy the resulting images to a GPU's framebuffer to see it on-screen :D
 
last i checked, rivatuner could only load the overclocked settings for one card upon restart.
so you might not even be able to overclock you're 8800, unless you like doing it every time you start windows.

Depends on what your PPU is. If you're using one of those dedicated PPU cards released the past years (PCI/PCIe), then it'll probably bottleneck your game (seeing the FPS comparisons people post here), an 8800GT or better as dedicated PPU will be fine, if you've got a GTX card, then you can use that one for PhysX too without a noticable hit on gameplay.
