I have an EVGA 8800GT SC. 650Mhz Core, 950mhz Memory. Stock cooling. It gets HOT. Over 80C while playing Crysis. No artifacting or freezes though. I was thinking of getting the Accelero S1 Rev2 Cooler with the turbo fans to overclock it to 700Mhz Core, 1000Mhz memory. Do you think this is worth it? Whats the max i can go with the core until i need a voltage mod?

Well, with 8800gt it can all depend. From what I've heard its a but hit or miss but Im stable at 675/1000 with stock cooling (but its noisy as heck, so Im getting a new cooler soon)

You may not hit 700 1000 but a new cooler will defiantly improve your temperatures and probably allow you to bump it up a but more.

I would go with any of the following

Thermalright HR-03
Arctic Cooling Accelero S1
Coolink Gfxchilla

The Thermalright is the best but also the biggest and most expensive.
The coolink is supposed to be amazing for the size/price, but is not out yet (at least not where I live)

It definitely is luck of the draw when it comes to overclocking. When I owned an 8800GT SC, I could not overclock the memory to 1000mhz at all even with the temps fairly low compared to what I've seen around here running the same speeds. It would often crash or artifact. Before you get a new cooler, bump up the fan speed and see if it makes any difference. Otherwise, I've heard great things about the HR-03 and S1.

Do you have rivatuner installed? The default fan control in the bios is very poor and doesn't ramp the fan up quickly enough. I have rivatuner setup to control my fanspeed and it has really helped the temps under load.

700/1000 is the max stable I've been able to get. From what I hear around it's about the standard without a volt mod.

I am going to keep a close eye on this thread as this is what I want to do with my 8800GT soon after I am done o/c'ng my CPU (big thanks to MaxTheLimit for that).

As far as I know and read somewhere, the Acelero S1 w/ 2 fans is the best bang for your buck and this is the one that came with my ECS 8800GT. The only thing is that I don't think I am capable of going SLI with two of those (at least not with my EVGA 680i) because the HSF is huge and will cover the other PCIe slot so be careful when buying your HSF if you are thinking on going SLI..

80 Degrees seems really hot!

Not even my friends gets that high when play Crysis.

I think his only goes up to like 65 maybe. But maybe I am wrong.

He has Antec 900 case.

I never hear the fan on the video card get loud? Its like it doesnt spin up. I have the latest bios for the card installed.

Before ordering any 3rd HSF, I think you should try:

a) replace the goop you have on your GPU with a thin layer of AC5 or MX2 ceramic thermal paste.
b) use RivaTuner to adjust fan speed.

This should get you to much safer 70C range.

BTW...Friend of my is getting 85C with his XFX 8800GT at load without any issues, he is too lazy to reapply thermal paste on his card. I even offered to do it for him... :D

You should hear your fan at full blast for few seconds after turning your PC on...

My old stock 8800gt cooler at higher rpm settings was ANNOYING AS ALL HELL...

replaced with accelero s2 and its like silent......

and temps went from 85-90C under load to about 55C under load...

BTW accelero s2 and accelero s1 and accelero s1 r2 all work on the 8800gt...

I did this today. I put Artic Silver 5 on and it dropped my load temps a good 4-6C. Now when playing crysis it hits as high as 78C as opposed to 84C. Probablly going to hold off on the cooler and get a 9800GTX when they become available.

I own S1 r1 and I love it except 'so-so' ram sinks. Also I wish S1 came with mosfet/vr sinks, but what do you expect from $25 product :D

I have a BFG 8800GT OC edition and the stock core is 625mhz. I got it up to 730mhz roughly and it stayed under 60c.

I have it running now at 710/1622/1000 and it gets to like 51c during heavy gaming but most times stays around 45idle, 49 load.

I'm using the Accelero S1 on my 8800GT and I'm getting 720/1030 clocks with temps in low to mid 50's while heavy gaming.
That's passive :)

how many case fans do you have? The [H] review for the S1 alone says thats not possible.

For one, they are using ATI tool to put 100% load on the GPU, my temps are while gaming which typically does not use 100%...

For another, take a look at the test setup they use. A single 700rpm fan a foot away from the Accelero with nothing to direct airflow at all. With the components inside a case the airflow is restricted to a specific path and ends up blowing the air through the fins of the Accelero instead of into an open area. The fan may be close to the same distance away, but the case provides a channel for the air to flow through.
For this same reason my GPU temps rise at least 5-7c when I take off the side panel to my case.
I am using a single intake and single exhaust, both around 1200rpm.

That's pretty impressive I've had my XFX 8800GT failing with ram running at its stock 950Mhz (random freezes/lockups)... with S1 rev1 with two 120mm Yate Loons attached to it and blowing air on RAM..... damn DDR.... I did RMA my card and it is on its way to XFX (excellent support so far ;)). The easiest way for me to reproduce the issue was to play PES2008, sometimes the problem would happen after 10 minutes and sometimes 5 hours.....weird...

For anybody interested try playing Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 demo (just a warning it is a whooping 1.1GB). BTW....it is the best soccer game by far :D

I'm just jealous seeing guys like you with running RAM over 1Ghz :( on top of that passively.

Seems like I got a good 8800GT. I can get 750mhz core and 1070mhz memory stable on stock HSF. I put the fan to 65% so it stays cool. I have good airflow throughout my case though.

So my ECS 8800GT w/Acelero S1 cooler can see higher clocks than the lowly 700/1000 I have on it so far? I was testing Frontlines: Fuel of War last night and the GPU temps were lower than 50c but I had a lock on my rig so I don't know if it is because of the O/C on the CPU or low voltage on the OCZ Ram... I gotta keep on testing and I am not a very patient man :D.

the easiest way to test this is to run the game with stock speeds on either the CPUandRAM or GPUandVRAM and overclock the guts out of the other....

omg no... send it back... send it back... seND iT bAAaAaaCCKKK!!!:eek::eek::eek:

well.. at least ECS graphic cards aren't as bad as their motherboards... but the dodgy work from ECS makes me doubt that despite being a reference nvidia board... pushing especially the ram is a bad idea with that card... i reckon 700/950 is more suited to that card.

Yeah I used some nice Zalman ramsinks on the memory. Did you use the ones that came with the S1? or left them bare?

My card is an EVGA, and seems to be a great one :)

Yea, I am very choosy when it comes to buying hardware from companies I don't know and even though I wanted to go with Evga or BFG, I found a very good price on it (in the HOT DEALS forums of Hardforums) and the reviews were positive (inside the thread), aside from this one here... I'm keeping it for now.

I've used the ones that came with it along with some 'home' made mosfet/vr sinks. Once I get my card back I'm thinking about getting some copper ones or at least Zalman ZM-RHS1 ones.... Also I made another batch of home made mosfet/vr sinks (a little better than the last ones). :D

Guys, I don't know if this merits a new thread or not and since it is part of the overclocking I wanted to do I'll just post here.

I am back at having my E6300 @ 2.8Ghz and I have even upped my ECS 8800GT 720/1040 IIRC but I am having an issue with my Ram... here's the scoop.

I don't know if I have bad Ram or the programmer is the one at fault here. it seems that no matter what I do, I can't get the Ram (OCZ SLI PC2-8500 1066Mhz) to work at 1066mhz even if I up the voltage to 2.3v. As soon as I do that windows locks up on me after a few minutes of regular load (outlook, browser on). The bios reads it at 1067mhz and ths is what strikes me as ODD because it usually reads lower than the mhz I want, for instance, if I lower it to a few notches below 1066 (say 1060mhz), the Bios reads at 1040mhz.

I know it is extremely hard to troubleshoot but do you think I should be calling OCZ with this problem? I have read on other forums that some people have o/c this same memory to 1200mhz w/o a glitch. Now, I know that each memory/board combo will yield different numbers but to not be able to get to the std mhz is just freaky, more so when as soon as I drop a few mhz, the system is super stable even while playing the SP campaign of Frontlines for long periods of time, the CPU temp only gets to about 62 degrees (1 core) in between map loadings, then it comes back to 56 to 58 so I have no clue why it does this.

Another thing I am wondering is... why does 1 core usually get 3 to 4 degrees hotter than the other one?
