Just a quick question seem to be having some trouble. I am trying to overclock my 2500+ Barton using the stock HSF. I keep running into problems where the pc wont boot at all no post or anything.
I have
2500+ Barton
Gigabyte 7n400 Pro Ultra Nforce2 motherboard
512MB of Dual Channel Hyper-X (supposedly the best hyperX model they have made to date sells on ebay for like double the price I paid..anyway..)
So, when I first installed it all which was a couple years ago the bios would show I was running at 100mhz FSB rather than the default 166 it should have been. I thought this was weird, but when I put the FSB to where it was supposed to be it would register as a 1.8ghz 2500+ and all seemed well. However eventually I got greedy and decided to jump it up, reading that the barton supposedly overclocked quite well and seeing a friend pump his 2500+ up alot with the stock cooling and the same motherboard and seemingly the same memory. So I went into the bios, jumped the FSB up a couple and then up some more until I reached 183mhz FSB which gave me a 2600+ @ about 1.9ghz or so. Now my friend was able to get his to 200mhz FSB with no real problems giveing him a 3200+ it ran pretty hot, but seemed stable enough. When I tried to go past 183 the PC would not post and I had to reset the cmos and then go into the bios and change everything back the way I had it etc. For awhile I left it at 183mhz and gave up.
Late on I tried again, this time jumping the voltage on the cpu up to 1.7v from the 1.65 it is at normally. Still not working at all had to reset. Jumped it to 1.75 and tried and still nothing. I asked my friend and his was at 220mhz FSB with a 1.75v (watercooled now) but non-water cooled he could get it to 200mhz FSB at stock voltage. I tried again last week doing what I was told to do and still can't get it to overclock.
I ended up flashing the bios with a newer version which I read had significant improvement over the version I was running thing I went from F9 to F11 - anyway, after the PC wouldn't boot and I reset the motherboard finally reads the processor as a 2500+ and I don't have to mess with the FSB to get it to the correct speeds for stock. However, now I can't overclock it at all. I tried to push it back to 183 got nothing. Tried at 180, still nothing. Kept going lower and lower and it just isn't doing anything. I think I might have gotten it to boot at 177fsb which is a weak ass overclock. The question is, how the hell can I overclock this pig with the stock HSF? I know its possible with the same setup. So what am I doing wrong here? When I had it at 183 it didn't run hot at all so I was surprised I couldn't go past that. Multiplier is locked even though the bios would suggest I can change it (which It doesn't) so I dont know. I'd like to get it to 3000+ Range is possible. Im trying to get the most of of this to tide myself over waiting for the next best thing (mostly dual core) Any suggestions or ideas or info you all have would be awesome.
