Overclock or Upgrade??

I currently have a eVGA 8800GT 256MB card, I have been debating if it would be worth while to upgrade to a eVGA 9800 GT 512MB or just overclock what I have.

Here are the specs of my current pc:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 7750 Kuma
GIGABYTE GA-MA780G-UD3H
G.SKILL 4GB DDR2 1066

I need to know what the best aftermarket cooling fan is as well.


Also wondering if the MB on the card matters alot since I have 4GB of ram anyways.

It depends on your resolution, but to be honest a 9800GT would be mostly a sideways upgrade since it's basically identical to your current card except with more RAM. I'd recommend something like a 4850, a GTS250, or something better instead if you really want to upgrade.

i think he might be talking about a 32-bit system in reference to 4gb of RAM and GFX memory :s
 
I believe he is asking about the amount of memory on the card, if that is the case then yes, the amount of memory on the card matters, it is NOT the same as system RAM.
 
Oh, he meant MB as in megabytes, not as in motherboard :D. I get it now.
 
Ok, so since my card is a 8800GT 256MB card, would it be worth it to buy an aftermarket cooler and overclock it , to hold out a little longer? Or is the megabytes of the card going to bog the card down?
 
Depends on the resolution you play at. For 1440x900, I don't think it (256MB limitation) matters much.
I figure that 512MB is the minimum you'd want for 1680x1050. More for 1920x1200 of course.
There's only a single 22" LCD at my house, and I paired it up with a 512MB 8800GT. I didn't want to run into that 256mb limitation at the resolution. Textures take a lot of memory.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with spending money on an aftermarket cooler for that card at this point. You're better off saving your money for a better card. $25 for what, 5 fps more?
