Over heating Pentium 4?

First off, I am new here so if I am posting a stupid question please forgive me. I'm not exactly sure what kind of CPU this is, other than it's a 2.4 Ghz Pentium 4. I am pretty sure they have different version of P4s out there, and the settings/preformace of them may be different.

My problem is aftering playing video games for half an hour, maybe less; my computer will suddenly reboot. Then in the bios it will tell me "Hardware Monitor found an error Press F1 to skip or Press Del to enter setup." Well, at first I just skipped it, figuring it was something abnormal. So, couple hours later I start to play again, and bam! Computer reboots. Same message this time, so I enter setup. I go to the Hardward Monitor; it shows some interesting information that I had not known existed, including the CPU Temp. Well, the Temp. showed 80.1 Degrees C/178 Degree F; !!! Yes, I am sure of those numbers. Is this too high? If so, how in the hell can I get it lower?

I noted that it showed the RPMs of my CPU Fan, it was operating at around 3500 RPMs.

Anyway, if anyone needs any more information, please ask and tell me how to obtain the information; just in case I don't.

Thanks in advance,
Skillz

did you build this computer yourself, or was it a retail machine?

-If you built it yourself you might not have had thermal grease between the heatsink and cpu.
-If you bought it from a friend how old is it? Maybe the thermal grease dried out.
-Maybe the headsink isn't seated correctly.
-If it was retail maybe it was a bad heatsink.?

I got it from a friend (for free) and he knows his computers, so I am sure he put it on correctly.

Where can I get thermal grease from though, I'll just redo it if that could cause this problem.

Hey,

Yes I have case fans. Here's the layout.

Two 80 MM fans on my 500W powersupply. (I guess they are blowing out)
One 80 MM fan on the back, I think it's blowing in
One 60 MM fan on the front of the case, it's infront of my two harddrives, and I belive it is blowing in also.
One xx fan on my video card.
The Heatsink/Fan and it's blowing down I do belive.

You should get another fan on the back of the machine, have them blowing out(exhaust). The intake is fine on the front., but if you can you might want to put another one in the front to, as another intake.

Well I plan to get two 80 MM fans and place them in the front, blowing in.

I will get a 2nd fan and have it blow out, as I will reverse the fan currently in the rear. However, I have a question about intake and exhaust of the fans. How can you truly tell which side the fans are blowing? I can place my hand on either side, and I still feel wind; yet it's close enough in volume that it's relatively hard to tell which side is blowing the hardest. I'm such a noob.

Well thanks for your help.

I am purchasing thermal grease, 10 80 mm fans and two 120 mm fans.

Just gotta find the best ones IE: The ones that move the most air.

Thanks!

cripe lol i uno about that one. Usually there is an emblem on the fan that is in the way the air is blowing out. I have some extra 80mm speeze fan's that I could send you for like $4 or $5 shipped. I could send ya 3 of um. two for the front and one more for the back.

make sure that heatsink is seated properly!
 I used my P4 for a while with the heatsink hovering over the processor..... looked attached tho but the temperatures were about that.. it amusingly went up to about 200F and I decided to shut it down crapo ecs... -_-

Hope you made sure all fans you just ordered can fit, unless you plan on cutting new holes for fans, since you said you had 80 mm fans in back, and 60 mm in front, but ordered 80mm and 120 mm fans.

And why did you order 10 80 mm fans???
