Ordering 74G Raptor differences in model #s?????

vs
WD740GDRTL
They are both the 74Gig raptors.And the only bit of info I have is that the WD740GDRTL is found on WD's website> just trying to make sure i dont buy non retail non crappy drive.

P.S. anyone bought this drive OEM ??you save maybe 40 bucks is it worth it?

Keep those 70(!) bucks. You can get the drive for $180 on ZZF, it ships with the same five year warranty. It doesn't ship with SATA cable, SATA power adapter, or mounting hardware. However, you most likely already have these items, and they are certainly not worth $70. It mounts like any other ATA drive, has a regular molex power connector, and the SATA data cable most likely came with your motherboard.

Unlike CPUs, you are almost universally better off buying OEM hard drives over retail kits. On WD's and Maxtor's consumer 7200RPM drives, the warranty is actually three times longer on an OEM!

I know that OEM stuff is ok stuff. I generally get retail merchandise. But in this case, spending 170 + bucks on a HD is kind of out there. Are there any bad expierences people had to with ordering OEM raptors. i guess its 30+ bucks i would be saving

Actually, all Raptors (retail or bulk) are warrantied for five years. The extra thirty bucks for the retail version basically buys you a special SATA cable which takes up both the SATA data socket and the SATA power socket on your drive. And if you use that cable, you will be forced to use the Molex power connection to your drive, since the SATA data cable supplied with retail Raptors does not provide any power connection at all whatsoever even though it takes up both SATA connectors on the drive.

ok first of all, i bought a retail 74G raptor at frys.. it was 200 bucks - a 30 dollar rebate. Which was what it would have been online. But i dont know if something is wrong with it. It sounds like an old harddrive thats "thinking "too much. like if its having problems spinning up.
I need to know how hot is it supposed to get. and whats up with noise . anyone else have similiar probs

Raptors have a distinctly differen noise... a grinding like a scsi drive if your not familiar... nothing wrong with them... just industrial strenth actuators and heads.. .make a deeper clicking noise... as far as heat goes about 41ish or so degrees C... is within specs I believe. Just measure the drives speed does it seem to slow..?? If not then its probably just fine... If this is your first raptor you'll adjust quickly : )

I don't own one (yet) so I couldn't tell you for sure... however, I can dictate to you from commom sense, that the HD will get hotter than a standard HD because it spins at 10000 RPM vs 7200... I can also tell you that for the same reason, the seek times are louder than standard HDs. However, those that own the drive could probably tell you more.

Not all 74GB raptor hard drive implement TCQ. Any model number that ends with WD740GD-xxxxA0 may not support TCQ correctly. These hard drives were our initial release product that should not have reached the Retail or channel market (as these were beta testing units). Inevitably, some of these drives reached channel inventory and ended up in end users hands.



anybody have any info on that? ive been looking, but i cant find anything. cuz i have an A0 revision, and im thinking this could be a reason my hdd's just arent as fast as i would expect them to be

by the way.. how would you check the rpms off your HD?

I am having issues with this drive. I read a few things an yes including the manual and Western digital FAQs.. but am still confused. I honestly believe i have a not so great drive. Anyways here it goes.
i have the K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI motherboard. . .
I have the 74 G raptor and a 60 Gig IDE harddrive.
what should be the proper configuration at least in my mobo settings IF i am trying to set up the Raptor as the primary drive. I only ask because this because it gives me a DISK ERROR OCCURED , PLEASE INSERT SYSTEM DISK THEN PRESS ENTER >> message. I understand that under HARD DISK PRIORITY mobo settings, that i should choose the raptor as the primary drive. Are there any other settings I should be worried about such as RAID interfereing. Should Raid be on or not?

From what i read online .. at the FAQs it seems that certain boards cannot decide for themselves that they should allow SATA drives as the boot drive UNLESS the system also has an EIDE harddrive.
What would be the easiest solution to this?
1)take drive back to store and start all over.
2)Reset all mobo settings?
3)Reinstall Windows (this time not having the other harddrive (60gig ))connected?
4)and last but not least any ideas on wtf DISK error means? >> settings incorrect?
